Coinbase Unveils Wrapped Bitcoin (cbBTC) Integration On Solana Network

Sep 22, 2024 at 10:30 pm

The Solаnа blockchаin is sеt to significаntly еnhаncе its position in Dеcеntrаlizеd Finаncе (DеFi).

Coinbase Unveils Wrapped Bitcoin (cbBTC) Integration On Solana Network

Coinbase is set to integrate its wrapped Bitcoin product, cbBTC, into the Solana network, a move that will bolster Solana's presence in decentralized finance (DeFi).

The decision was announced at the recent Breakpoint 2024 conference by Coinbase, where Hassan Ahmed, Country Director for Singapore at Coinbase, expressed the company’s excitement about the integration.

“We recently launched cbBTC on Base, but our users love Solana, and so do we. So we are very excited to announce that we will be bringing native cbBTC to Solana as well,” said Ahmed during his presentation at Breakpoint. The announcement was met with a positive response from the audience, reflecting the rising demand for such collateralized Bitcoin assets within the Solana ecosystem.

Coinbase’s cbBTC Gains Rapid Traction

Coinbase launched cbBTC on September 12 to cater to users in Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom, and all U.S. states except New York.

A key feature of cbBTC is its ability to represent Bitcoin on programmable blockchains, such as Ethereum and Base, while being fully backed by Bitcoin held in Coinbase's custody at a 1:1 ratio. This eliminates the need for separate order books or trading pairs for cbBTC on the Coinbase platform.

Since its launch, cbBTC has quickly gained traction. Data from CryptoQuant shows that within just seven days, cbBTC became the third most popular wrapped Bitcoin product.

This rapid success surpasses established rivals, such as Huobi BTC (HBTC) and renBTC (RENBTC), both of which have been available since 2020.

The swift adoption of cbBTC has also drawn interest from major players in the DeFi sector. On September 12, the team behind Sky, a prominent lending and borrowing platform formerly known as MakerDAO, proposed removing Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) as a collateral asset.

The decision was prompted by concerns regarding the alleged involvement of Tron founder Justin Sun with the project.

The Sky community explored several alternatives to WBTC, including both centralized and decentralized tokenized Bitcoin products, with Coinbase’s cbBTC and Threshold’s tBTC being prominent contenders. On September 19, the community voted decisively, with over 88% supporting the removal of WBTC from the platform.

Coinbase’s decision to integrate cbBTC onto Solana marks a significant moment for both platforms. Solana benefits from acquiring a crucial wrapped Bitcoin asset, enhancing its DeFi offerings, while Coinbase broadens its scope, responding to the increasing demand for wrapped Bitcoin solutions in the Solana ecosystem. This collaboration ultimately fosters greater accessibility and innovation in the constantly evolving DeFi landscape.
