Coinbase Embraces Bitcoin Lightning with Lightspark Partnership

Apr 04, 2024 at 07:44 am

Coinbase and Lightspark, an enterprise-focused Bitcoin Lightning solution led by former PayPal president David Marcus, have partnered to integrate Lightning on Coinbase's platform. With 108 million users, Coinbase aims to enable faster and cheaper Bitcoin transactions by leveraging Lightning's layer-2 capabilities, potentially reducing the recent surge in fees on Bitcoin's base layer.

Coinbase Embraces Bitcoin Lightning Through Lightspark Partnership

San Francisco, California - Coinbase, the leading cryptocurrency exchange, has taken a significant step towards integrating the Bitcoin Lightning Network into its platform through a strategic partnership with Lightspark, an enterprise-focused Lightning solution led by former PayPal President David Marcus.

In a recent blog post, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the integration of the Bitcoin layer-2 network is imminent. This integration will empower Coinbase's vast user base of over 108 million individuals to access potentially faster and more economical Bitcoin transactions.

"Lighting up all Coinbase touchpoints with Lightning" will shift a substantial portion of transaction activity to Bitcoin's second layer, effectively mitigating the recent surge in fees on Bitcoin's base layer, explained Lightspark in an earlier post.

Armstrong's confirmation of the Bitcoin Lightning integration, initially announced in September 2022, was met with anticipation within the cryptocurrency community. Coinbase did not provide further details on the implementation timeline at the time.

Lightspark, established in 2022, has dedicated significant efforts to simplifying the complexities associated with setting up and operating a Lightning node for efficient transaction processing.

The company's Lightspark Predict, an AI-driven intelligent engine, is designed to optimize liquidity requirements and routing in real-time, maximizing transaction success rates and minimizing completion times.

According to River, a Bitcoin financial services firm, the success rate of Lightning payments stands at approximately 99.7%, based on data from over 308,000 Lightning transactions processed on their platform in October 2022.

The primary cause of payment failures stems from the unavailability of a payment route with sufficient liquidity to facilitate the transfer. However, River's data indicates that the average Lightning transaction size was around 44,700 satoshis, equivalent to approximately $11.84.

River's estimates suggest that between 279,000 and 1.1 million Lightning users were active during the same period.

Coinbase's primary competitor, Binance, integrated Bitcoin Lightning into its platform in July 2022.

Lightning has emerged as a widely accepted payment method in various cities, including Lugano, Switzerland; El Zonte in El Salvador, known as "Bitcoin Beach"; and Utiva in Costa Rica, dubbed "Bitcoin Jungle."

Despite its growing adoption, some industry experts, like Bitcoin advocate Michael Saylor, advocate for Bitcoin's retention as a store of value rather than a medium of exchange.

The integration of Bitcoin Lightning on Coinbase marks a significant development in the mainstream adoption of the second-layer network. By enabling faster and more cost-effective transactions, Coinbase is poised to enhance the accessibility and usability of Bitcoin for a broader audience.
