Coinbase's Base Network Locks $4 Billion in Value as Meme Coins Surge
Apr 09, 2024 at 12:11 am
Coinbase's Base, an Ethereum layer-two network, has achieved remarkable growth, surpassing Ethereum and Arbitrum in transaction volume and reaching a total value locked (TVL) of $4 billion. This surge in TVL is primarily driven by an explosion of meme coin activity on the network.

Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-Two Scaling Network, Achieves $4 Billion Total Value Locked
New York, New York - April 8, 2024 - Coinbase's Ethereum layer-two scaling network, Base, has surged in popularity, reaching a total value locked (TVL) of over $4 billion. This surge is attributed to a surge in meme coin activity on the network, which has seen its transaction volume surpass that of Ethereum and Arbitrum.
According to data from L2Beat, Base's TVL has increased by 22% to over $4.33 billion. Its 30-day transaction count reached 50.34 million, surpassing Arbitrum's 40 million, Ethereum's 37.9 million, and Optimism's 18 million.
Base is now ranked as the third-largest Ethereum L2 after Arbitrum and Optimism. Arbitrum currently has a TVL of $19 billion, while Optimism's TVL stands at $7.96 billion. However, Base is the only network among the top three to post TVL gains in the past week, with its TVL surging 13.2% in the past seven days alone.
The surge in Base's TVL is largely driven by a surge in meme coin activity on the network. Data from CoinGecko shows that in the last 24 hours, the market capitalization for meme coins on the Base network has increased by 25% to $1.8 billion.
While the growing popularity of the network has attracted users, it has also attracted scammers. According to Dune, over $3 million was stolen from Base in March, highlighting the need for users to exercise caution.
Despite the recent surge in meme coin activity, analysts remain optimistic about the long-term prospects of Ethereum layer-two networks. A report by VanEck estimates that the market capitalization of layer-twos will reach $1 trillion by 2030, driven by Ethereum's slow speed and network congestion.
