This £2 coin could be worth up to £65 - here's how to spot it in your change
Oct 21, 2024 at 07:30 pm
Many Brits across the country will have a collection of spare change, whether it be in a jar at home, in your car, or in your bag

If you find a particular £2 coin in your spare change, you could be in for a nice payout, as it could be worth up to £65.
Many Brits across the country will have a collection of spare change, whether it be in a jar at home, in your car, or in your bag. You may not always give your change a second thought. However, you may want to keep an eye out as you could be sitting on a small fortune.
A coin can be worth a significant sum if it is sought after or "rare". One example - and probably the most well-known - is the Royal Mint's Kew Gardens 50p coin, which can potentially go for thousands, and the commemorative 50p coins minted to mark the London 2012 games.
One £2 is particularly sought after by collectors; however, unlike the Kew Gardens coin, it is not very well known. However, when you take a quick look online, you can see it is sold for more than 30 times its original £2 value.
The coin in question is The Cattle of Geryon-themed £2 coin. Issued in Gibraltar, the commemorative coin circulated in 2000 and features a sketch of Geryon - a figure in Greek mythology - on the obverse and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse. According to the rare coin website Numista, the coin has a rarity index of 68 - on its scale from 0 - being the most common - to 100, which means it is very rare.

The Cattle of Geryon is part of the Twelve Labours of Heracles series, which was minted by the private company PobJoy Mint for the government of Gibraltar in 2020. On the collection, the company said: "The Twelve Labours of Hercules were a series of episodes concerning a penance to be carried out by Hercules, who was one of the greatest of the Greek Heroes.
"The Labours were for Hercules to atone after he slew his family. They were accomplished over 12 years at the service of King Eurystheus. Each coin in the series features one of the Labours." There were only 1,750 versions of each coin minted, making them quite the sought-after item for coin collectors.
Several of these coins are currently listed on eBay, which shows that you can make a small fortune if you come across one. Three were sold in September, and they went for between £45 and £65, with up to 16 bids placed on each one.
However, it's important to remember that when selling a coin, it is never guaranteed that you'll make a mint, and a coin is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
If you are a collector, then you should also keep in mind that fake coins can appear online too, so always be wary before handing over any cash. Websites and Facebook groups from change experts like Coin Hunter can help you work out if a coin is the real deal or not. You can also get coins verified by the Royal Mint.
