Savvy gardeners can prepare their lawns now to ensure a lush green sward next year. It's not just about the trim - to tackle those less-than-perfect patches, a method known as "overseeding" comes into play.

Common issues such as wear and tear can leave lawns looking sparse - gardens are meant for enjoyment, after all. But the good news is that overseeding can rejuvenate these areas, bidding farewell to patchiness and unwelcome weeds, and welcoming a rich, green carpet of grass instead.

And to make things simpler, a gardening pro has let slip a £1 coin trick that could transform your overseeding technique.

Timothy Green from iCANLAWN.com opened up about overseeding, which despite being straightforward, does require some pre-emptive checks.

For starters, successful seed growth calls for consistent temperatures above 10 degrees for around a fortnight. Gardeners should shy away from overseeding when it’s swelteringly hot or bitterly cold, as the seeds won’t take root well.

Preparing for optimum results means clearing away moss, dead tufts, or pesky weeds before sowing any seeds, according to Timothy.

"Then you should mow the lawn as you won't be able to while the new grass is growing. And if you have any areas that are uneven, or have low-quality soil, use some topsoil to even these out," he advised in his chat with the Express.

"Then it's time to 'overseed' the worn zones. Aim for a rate of 35g of seeds per square metre. Scatter the seeds efficiently and use a rake to make sure they have space to grow."

It might be difficult for gardeners to recognise if they are correctly overseeding their grass. Timothy has provided the nifty £1 coin trick to help with this.

He said: "Three-pound coins stacked is the right depth for your seeds to access water, heat and sunlight."

Gardeners will actually be able to see overseeding results in as little as seven to 10 days. This is when the soil plugs will break down, the seeds will begin germinating and the grass will start to grow fuller and healthier.

When new grass reaches around five centimetres, it can be mowed for the first time on the highest setting. You're not done yet though, as you need to make sure you water your seedlings every day for around six weeks.

When you've finally finished the overseeding process, you will be rewarded with a fuller-looking lawn.
