Circle Introduces Native USDC Stablecoin on Ethereum Scaling Solution zkSync
Apr 12, 2024 at 01:17 am
Stablecoin issuer Circle has announced the launch of its native USDC stablecoin on the zkSync layer-2 Ethereum scaling protocol. Unlike the previously bridged USDC, the native USDC is backed by Circle and offers benefits such as enhanced regulation, full reserves, 1:1 redeemability, and easy integration into existing applications.

Circle Introduces Native USDC Stablecoin on Ethereum Scaling Solution zkSync
In a significant advancement for the financial technology industry, Circle, the issuer of the dollar-pegged stablecoin USDC, has announced the launch of native USDC on zkSync, a layer-2 Ethereum (ETH) scaling protocol. This development marks a transformative step in expanding the accessibility and utility of USDC across the Ethereum ecosystem.
zkSync, renowned for its innovative zero-knowledge proof technology, offers users enhanced transaction privacy and speed without compromising security. The integration of native USDC on zkSync provides a seamless and cost-effective solution for businesses and individuals alike.
Unlike the previously bridged USDC on zkSync, native USDC boasts a distinct set of advantages:
- Direct Backing and Regulation: Native USDC is fully backed by Circle, ensuring its stability and compliance with regulatory standards.
- 1:1 Redeemability: As with its existing form, native USDC remains redeemable for US dollars at a 1:1 ratio, providing users with confidence in its underlying value.
- Institutional Access: Institutional customers can conveniently mint and redeem USDC through Circle Mint, Circle's dedicated platform for institutional treasury management.
- Enhanced Integration: Native USDC streamlines integration into existing applications, enabling developers to leverage its benefits with ease.
zkSync has clarified that the existing bridged USDC will be renamed as USDC.e on block explorers, decentralized applications (dApps), and bridges. Native USDC will gradually replace the current circulating supply of USDC.e, with users and institutions able to seamlessly swap between the two on their preferred decentralized exchange (DEX).
Third-party bridges and centralized exchanges will continue to support USDC deposits and withdrawals, while the native zkSync bridge will exclusively facilitate withdrawals for both USDC and USDC.e.
With this latest integration, USDC now enjoys support on 16 blockchain networks, further solidifying its position as one of the most widely adopted stablecoins in the crypto industry.
Circle anticipates widespread adoption of native USDC on zkSync by leading ecosystem applications and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Platforms such as Koi Finance, ZeroLend, and SyncSwap are poised to harness its capabilities for payments, trading, and lending activities.
Additionally, businesses and institutions can seamlessly access on/off-ramps for USDC on zkSync through Circle Mint and its application programming interfaces (APIs). Circle Mint simplifies the transfer of USDC between supported chains, eliminating the complexities and delays associated with third-party bridging.
The integration of native USDC on zkSync underscores Circle's commitment to innovation and the advancement of the blockchain ecosystem. By providing a reliable and scalable solution, Circle empowers businesses and individuals to harness the transformative potential of digital assets in a secure and efficient manner.
