Block Integrates Square and Cash App for Automated Bitcoin Conversion
Apr 24, 2024 at 10:00 pm
Block, formerly known as Square, has introduced a new feature called Bitcoin Conversions, which allows eligible merchants to automatically convert a portion (1% to 10%) of their store's daily sales into Bitcoin (BTC) through Cash App. This service, currently available to sole proprietors or single member LLCs, aims to provide businesses with an easy way to access Bitcoin and diversify their holdings. Block will charge a flat 1% conversion fee for this service, presenting a potential additional revenue stream for the company.

Block Connects Square and Cash App for Automatic Bitcoin Conversion
In a significant move, Block, formerly known as Square, has integrated its merchant services system Square with its peer-to-peer payments app Cash App to facilitate automatic conversion of a portion of retail store sales into Bitcoin (BTC). This innovative tool, aptly named Bitcoin Conversions, is designed to cater to the growing demand among businesses for exposure to digital assets.
Simplified Bitcoin Adoption for Merchants
Bitcoin Conversions offers a streamlined solution for businesses seeking to incorporate Bitcoin into their financial strategies. Eligible Square users, initially limited to sole proprietors and single-member LLCs, will be provided with a dedicated Cash App account. This account will automatically receive a configurable percentage of their daily sales, ranging from 1% to 10%. The received funds will be seamlessly converted into BTC, providing businesses with a hassle-free method to acquire and manage the cryptocurrency.
Market Demand Driven Innovation
Block's decision to develop Bitcoin Conversions is rooted in extensive market research among Square sellers. The company's findings indicate a strong appetite for a solution that simplifies Bitcoin adoption and diversification of business assets. This aligns with the growing recognition of Bitcoin as a valuable long-term investment and a hedge against inflation.
Convenience and Control
"We've heard from many sellers that they want an easy way to access Bitcoin and diversify their holdings," said Michael Rihani, Bitcoin Product Lead at Cash App. "Bitcoin Conversions automates the process for sellers while still giving them flexibility and control over how they manage their Bitcoin." This feature strikes a balance between ease of use and autonomy, empowering businesses to incorporate Bitcoin into their operations without relinquishing decision-making authority.
Potential Revenue Stream for Block
Beyond its benefits for merchants, Bitcoin Conversions also presents a promising revenue opportunity for Block. The service charges a flat 1% conversion fee, lower than the standard fee for retail Bitcoin purchases on Cash App, but still providing an additional revenue stream for the company. The scale of this revenue will depend on the number of merchants adopting the service and the volume of capital converted daily.
Cash App as Bitcoin Hub
Cash App has emerged as a pivotal platform within Block's Bitcoin strategy. In addition to Bitcoin Conversions, the company recently launched Bitkey, a non-custodial hardware wallet, which seamlessly integrates with Cash App for secure Bitcoin storage and transactions. These initiatives demonstrate Block's commitment to fostering Bitcoin adoption and enhancing its ecosystem.
Financial Performance and Bitcoin Holdings
In 2023, Block's Cash App business generated a profit of $1.18 billion, representing a 25% year-over-year growth. Square, meanwhile, contributed $828 million in gross profit. As of December 2023, the company held approximately 8,038 BTC, valued at $531 million at current market prices.
