Bitdeer Unveils New “SEAL04” Chip to Improve Bitcoin Mining Efficiency

Jun 07, 2024 at 07:44 pm

The chip will improve Bitcoin mining efficiency while reducing prices, power consumption, and environmental impact.

Bitdeer Unveils New “SEAL04” Chip to Improve Bitcoin Mining Efficiency

Bitcoin mining firm Bitdeer has unveiled the “SEAL04” chip in its technical roadmap for the recently released Sealminer rig.

The SEAL04 chip will reportedly offer energy efficiency as low as 5 joules per terahash (J/TH) and will be released in Q2 2025.

According to a press release, the roadmap aims to enhance transparency in the mining industry by setting expectations for miners on technological advancements and equipment delivery.

Leveraging the SEAL04 chip, Bitdeer will mass-produce and ship the fourth-generation Sealminer machine in Q4 2025. The machine will boast optimal power consumption of 5.5–6 J/TH, significantly lower than the average of 29 J/TH.

As Bitcoin mining encountered power consumption challenges, mining companies have increasingly pivoted toward reducing power usage. Following its ban in Kazakhstan, most miners shifted to greener North American grids or sustainable off-grid locations.

The introduction of a less power-hungry microprocessing unit could be a pivotal development for the crypto mining industry.

This chip could notably enhance Bitcoin mining efficiency while reducing power consumption, which in turn should lead to lower operational costs for miners and a smaller environmental impact from mining.

In March, Bitdeer announced that its 4-nanometer Bitcoin mining chip SEAL01, offering a power efficiency of 18.1 J/TH, had completed initial testing as part of the Sealminer A1 mining rig.

The previous SEAL01 chip was built using a semiconductor fabricator’s 4-nanometer manufacturing technology. The chip could achieve a power efficiency ratio of 18.1 J/TH, according to the manufacturer.

Chips are the physical components that perform the complex calculations necessary to verify and secure blockchain transactions, a function that cryptocurrency mining heavily relies on.

The news follows an announcement on May 31 that Bitdeer will purchase up to $150 million in Tether shares in a private placement, as part of an agreement between the two firms.

According to Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, Bitdeer is one of the largest Bitcoin mining vertical integrations, owing to its innovative technology and strong R&D practices.

In May 2023, Bitdeer Technologies Group and Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), the sovereign investment arm of Bhutan, partnered to establish carbon-neutral digital asset mining in Bhutan. Bitdeer did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph's request for comment on the SEAL04 chip.
