Bitcoin Surges Past $65,000, Boosting Crypto Stocks

May 06, 2024 at 05:08 pm

Bitcoin surged past $65,000 on Monday, continuing its upward trend and emerging from bear market conditions. Crypto-related stocks followed suit, with MicroStrategy and Marathon Digital experiencing significant gains. Bitcoin's resurgence was attributed to weaker-than-expected nonfarm payroll data, increasing the appeal for risk assets and boosting the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate cut.

Bitcoin Regains $65,000 Threshold, Spurring Crypto Stocks

In a significant surge, Bitcoin's value surpassed the $65,000 threshold on Monday, continuing its upward trajectory that propelled it out of bear market territory over the weekend.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $65,393, registering a 2.7% increase in the preceding 24 hours. This resurgence has had a positive spillover effect on crypto-related stocks, which also experienced gains in Monday's premarket trading.

Leading the gains were MicroStrategy (MSTR) and Marathon Digital (MARA), which surged by 8.7% and 7.7%, respectively. Other notable performers included CleanSpark (CLSK) with a 5.6% increase, Riot Platforms (RIOT) with a 4.5% gain, and Coinbase (COIN) with a 3.6% rise.

The driving force behind Bitcoin's rebound can be attributed to weaker-than-anticipated nonfarm payroll data. This has led to a decline in the value of the US dollar, making risk assets, including cryptocurrencies, more attractive.

Financial markets are now pricing in a higher likelihood of a 25-basis-point interest rate reduction by the Federal Reserve in September. Such a move would create a more benign environment for cryptocurrencies, which tend to thrive in low-interest, high-liquidity conditions.

While the softer labor market data has provided impetus for the Fed to consider rate cuts, it is important to note that this payroll report follows five consecutive months of unexpected strength. Additionally, inflation continues to exceed the central bank's target of 2% per annum, exerting some pressure on the Fed's decision-making.

Analysts believe that Bitcoin's latest rally may be attributed to a combination of factors, including the aforementioned weaker payroll data, as well as an anticipation of increased institutional adoption and a favorable regulatory landscape. However, they caution that the cryptocurrency market remains volatile and investors should exercise due diligence before making any investment decisions.
