Bitcoin's Support Zone Emerges amid Price Slump

Apr 16, 2024 at 11:00 pm

On-chain analysis indicates Bitcoin's next significant demand zone around $56,000, suggesting this level could provide support in case of further decline. The absence of substantial support at $63,000-$64,890 has raised concerns, and short-term holders' Realized Price ($58,800) emerges as a potential support level to watch.

Bitcoin's Support Zone Emerges amid Price Slump

Bitcoin's Next Critical Support Zone Emerges as Price Slides

Recent on-chain data analysis reveals that Bitcoin (BTC) may encounter substantial support around the $56,000 price level if its ongoing decline persists. This finding stems from comprehensive market intelligence provided by IntoTheBlock, shedding light on the potential impact of previous investor acquisition patterns on future price movements.

Cost-Basis Distribution: A Key Indicator of Support and Resistance

In on-chain analysis, the significance of specific price levels is often ascertained by examining the total number of coins acquired by investors at those prices. This concept is known as the cost-basis distribution, and it plays a crucial role in identifying potential zones of support and resistance.

A recent IntoTheBlock chart vividly illustrates the distribution of BTC acquisition costs across various price ranges surrounding the current spot price. The diameter of each dot on the chart represents the quantity of Bitcoin purchased within the corresponding price range. It becomes apparent that the $63,000 to $64,890 range exhibits a high concentration of investors, with an estimated 1 million investors holding approximately 530,000 BTC.

Psychological Significance of Cost Basis

Psychologically, when an asset revisits its previous cost basis, investors tend to react based on its perceived significance. Investors who previously held profitable positions may be inclined to make further bets, while those who purchased near the peak may experience anxiety or consider selling to minimize losses.

$63,000 Support Level Breached

In the current market scenario, the $63,000 to $64,890 range was expected to provide support for Bitcoin. However, the coin's recent dip below this level suggests a potential breakdown of this support. As IntoTheBlock points out, the next significant range of potential support lies between $55,200 and $57,100.

"While this doesn't necessarily imply that Bitcoin will decline to this low, it's essential to monitor this range as the price explores recent support levels," notes IntoTheBlock. A further decline to the average price of this range ($56,000) would represent a substantial 10% drop from the coin's current spot value.

Short-Term Holder Realized Price

Before Bitcoin encounters the $55,200 to $57,100 support zone, it may face another noteworthy on-chain level. According to analyst James Van Straten, the Realized Price (average cost basis) of short-term holders currently stands around $58,800.

Short-term holders (STHs) are investors who acquired Bitcoin within the past 155 days. Historically, this group's Realized Price has served as a critical support level during bull markets. Breaches below this level have often signaled bearish transitions in the past.

"If we drop below this, I will concede to a bear market similar to May 2021," Straten remarks.

Recent Price Action and Sentiment

Over the past 24 hours, Bitcoin has experienced a significant decline of approximately 7%, erasing earlier gains. The coin currently trades around $62,100. This price action reflects a broader market sentiment that has turned cautious in recent weeks.

Conclusion

On-chain data suggests that Bitcoin faces potential support at the $56,000 level should its current decline continue. This level coincides with a significant concentration of investors who purchased coins between $63,000 and $64,890. Furthermore, the Realized Price of short-term holders, currently hovering around $58,800, may present another resistance level. Investors are advised to monitor these levels closely as they navigate the current market volatility.
