Bitcoin Stalls in Narrow Range, Awaits Catalyst for Rally

May 14, 2024 at 05:02 pm

Bitcoin continues its range-bound trading, fluctuating between $36,000 and $31,000. Despite a brief dip below $34,000 due to regulatory concerns, buyers have pushed prices back to $32,900. Experts attribute this consolidation to low trading volumes and the absence of significant bullish catalysts. Market participants note the declining Coin Days Destroyed metric and whale wallet accumulation as indicators of potential breakout conditions, while volume remains thin and equity markets in Asia show mixed performance.

Bitcoin Stalls in Narrow Range, Awaits Catalyst for Rally

Bitcoin Languishes in Predictable Price Range, Awaiting Catalyst for Bullish Breakout

In a continuation of its unexciting recent performance, Bitcoin remains confined within a narrowing price range, its trajectory dependent on an impending catalyst to ignite a rally.

Over the past 24 hours, Bitcoin's value has fluctuated between a low of $32,000 and an intraday high of approximately $33,319 in Asia, according to data from CoinDesk. It currently trades at $32,900.

On Thursday, Bitcoin breached the initial support level of $34,000 amidst renewed regulatory concerns following a warning from China's central bank regarding the risks associated with stablecoins.

Despite these concerns, Bitcoin's price remains within a holding pattern, bounded by increasingly tight support and resistance levels.

"Coin Days Destroyed (CDD) continues to decline, while whale wallets are gradually accumulating Bitcoin within the current rangebound trading," Oliver von Landsberg-Sadie, CEO of BCB Group, explained to CoinDesk via Telegram.

CDD is a metric developed by Glassnode that measures economic activity, giving greater significance to coins that have remained dormant for extended periods. It is calculated by multiplying the total number of coins involved in a transaction by the number of days that have passed since those coins were last spent.

"A weakening CDD undermines resistance, while the accumulation by whale wallets reinforces support," Landsberg-Sadie elaborated. "Any positive news could trigger a breakout, propelling Bitcoin back towards its long-term uptrend."

The daily chart for Bitcoin reveals that its price has been trapped between $36,000 and $31,000 since June 21. Simultaneously, trading volume has diminished across major exchanges, including those known for facilitating large transactions.

"We have significant ground to cover to align with the Stock to Flow projections," remarked Landsberg-Sadie, alluding to a model that predicts Bitcoin's price should currently be around $77,900.

The timeline for this recovery remains uncertain.

"Trading volumes remain subdued on most major exchanges," Samson Mow, CSO of Blockstream, told CoinDesk. "We have witnessed rapid price recoveries in the past, so we may expect similar behavior until substantial news emerges to drive prices higher."

Among the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, most have experienced slight declines, with Ethereum Classic (ETC) and Internet Computer (ICP) suffering the most significant losses over the past 24 hours.

Equity markets in Asia exhibit a mixed performance, with half of the indices experiencing gains or losses of approximately 1% or less.
