Bitcoin Soars to $71K, Driving Bets on Ordinal and BRC-20 Ecosystems

Apr 08, 2024 at 04:08 pm

Bitcoin surged past $71,000 during Asian trading hours, reaching its highest value since April 1st, driven by anticipation for the upcoming reward halving. This event is expected to reduce the issuance rate of new coins, historically preceding bull markets for Bitcoin. The broader crypto market remained relatively stable, with Ordinals and BRC-20 ecosystem tokens experiencing notable growth due to their perceived correlation with Bitcoin's potential price increase.

Bitcoin Surges to $71,000, Triggering Bets on Ordinal and BRC-20 Ecosystem

Tokyo, Japan - April 3, 2023: Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, has surged above $71,000 for the first time since April 1, propelled by anticipation surrounding the upcoming reward halving event later this month.

The halving, scheduled for April 20, will reduce the rate at which new bitcoins are created by 50%. This event has historically signaled the start of bull markets for the cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin's rise on Monday coincided with a boost in Ordinal and BRC-20 ecosystem bets. Ordinals are a recently introduced technology that allows users to embed data, such as digital art, into the Bitcoin blockchain. BRC-20 tokens, developed last year, allow users to issue transferable tokens directly through the Bitcoin network.

Data from CoinGecko indicates that Bitcoin rose 2% in the last 24 hours, reaching its highest price since April 1. The broader crypto market, represented by the CoinDesk 20 index, showed a modest gain of 0.43%.

Analysts believe that the upcoming halving will reduce the supply of new bitcoins, leading to increased demand and, potentially, a bull market for the cryptocurrency. The current block reward for mining transactions is 6.25 BTC, which will be reduced to 3.125 BTC after the halving.

Traders have reacted to the anticipated price rally by placing leveraged bets on Bitcoin futures. Open interest on BTC-tracked futures has maintained record-high levels above $25 billion, indicating expectations of increased price volatility.

Amid the heightened optimism, certain Bitcoin ecosystem tokens and projects have experienced notable gains. Ordinal projects, led by NodeMonkes and Pups, have attracted significant trading volume, surpassing established leaders like Ethereum and Solana.

The BRC-20 category of tokens has also performed well, with infrastructure token Multibit (MULTI) rising 22%. Meme coins, such as pepe {{PEPE}}, alex (ALEX), and pizza (PIZA), have also surged, with gains reaching 60%.

However, not all Ordinal tokens have benefited from the market optimism. PUPS, the token associated with the Pups Ordinal, declined by 22% as traders took profits after a 500% gain over the weekend.

While the upcoming halving has generated excitement among Bitcoin enthusiasts, it is crucial to note that the cryptocurrency market remains volatile, and the price of Bitcoin can fluctuate significantly. Investors are advised to exercise caution and carefully assess their risk tolerance before making any investment decisions.
