Bitcoin Pros and Cons: Is It a Good Investment?

Bitcoin Pros and Cons: Is It a Good Investment?

Bitcoin, the flagship cryptocurrency, offers high potential returns but comes with several risks, including high volatility and a lack of regulation.

Despite being virtually unavoidable in the investing world, Bitcoin has had its ups and downs. Here’s a closer look at the pros and cons of investing in Bitcoin.

Pro: Return on Investment

The biggest perk of investing in BTC is its potential for growth. Despite being a volatile asset class, Bitcoin has seen a relatively steady upward trajectory since its inception in 2009.

While the cryptocurrency has experienced ups and downs (more on that later), Bitcoin is currently trading at around $70,000 per token.

A handful of early investors have reaped the benefits of Bitcoin's massive gains. But even those who joined the bandwagon later are seeing their investments soar to new and astronomical highs.

According to some industry experts, Bitcoin could cross the $100,000 mark by 2025.

Con: Volatility

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows with Bitcoin. One of the most common talking points regarding Bitcoin is its volatility.

Throughout the cryptocurrency’s history, there have been several major corrections that have sent panicked investors into a tailspin.

As recently as 2021, Bitcoin experienced a 53% crash. From December 2017 to December 2018, Bitcoin fell by 84% after the bubble burst.

Given the lack of regulation in the industry, it is not uncommon for Bitcoin to experience falls of 20% or more. Despite inevitably rising back up, those falls have been a lot for investors to handle at any given time.

Pro: Security

While some other cryptocurrencies are completely anonymous, Bitcoin instead identifies users via a specific numerical code.

However, those private keys are highly secure. It is the only way to prove that you own the cryptocurrency wallet and that no one else has access.

Furthermore, there is no “lost password” type of system where a key can be recovered.

The blockchain itself is essentially a public record of transactions. It mathematically guarantees that the transaction in question comes from that specific owner’s wallet.

It is far more secure than almost any other type of transaction occurring today. Users feel safe using Bitcoin, and that is a major selling point.

Con: Lack of Regulations

Although most investors are concerned with the rises and falls of Bitcoin, the lack of regulation is another critical issue.

While decentralization is key to the core of cryptocurrency, it also presents the problem of regulating the industry.

Scammers and thieves are a big part of the crypto world and have been a major reason why other coins have not been able to grow at the same level as Bitcoin.

While the SEC, the top regulator in the United States, continues to implement regulations, other government entities are not following suit.

Bitcoin is also taxed and must be reported as capital gains or losses on your tax return.

Another challenge that investors face is the inability to write off those losses, as there are no regulations governing the matter.

Ultimately, Bitcoin is one of the fastest-rising investments in the world. It continues to rise even 15 years later.

We don’t know what the next year (or the years after) will bring, but Bitcoin will be there.
