Bitcoin Plunges as Volatility Soars, Spot ETF Outflows Hit $120 Million
Apr 25, 2024 at 04:33 pm
Amid heightened volatility, Bitcoin (BTC) plunged by 4.5% to a low of $63,500, dragging the broader crypto market down. Notably, investors withdrew $120 million from spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States on April 24th, contributing to the sell-off. Despite a slight recovery, BTC remains down 3.8% daily, while large-cap altcoins like Avalanche, Shiba Inu, and Solana recorded even greater losses.

Bitcoin Plummets Amidst Volatility, Spot ETF Outflows Reach $120 Million
After several days of hovering near $66,000, Bitcoin (BTC) has experienced a sharp decline, falling to a low of $63,500 as volatility intensifies. Coinciding with this drop, the outflows from United States spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) markets have surged to $120 million on April 24th.
BTC Loses 4.5% Value
Data collated by CoinMarketCap reveals that BTC lost approximately 4.5% of its value within a matter of hours, abruptly plummeting from $66,700 to $63,500. While the leading cryptocurrency has rebounded slightly at the time of writing, hovering around $64,000, it remains in the negative territory, down 3.8% from the previous day's valuation.
The sudden fall of Bitcoin from the $66,000 threshold has had a ripple effect on the broader crypto market, with over 91,000 traders facing liquidations totaling $208 million, as per data from CoinGlass. Short liquidations amounted to $32.18 million, while long positions accounted for $176 million.
Significantly, several large-cap altcoins, including Avalanche, Shiba Inu, Toncoin, Solana, and Cardano, have experienced even more severe losses than BTC, each recording declines of over 7%.
Spot ETF Outflows Reach $120 Million
On Wednesday, investors withdrew over $120 million from spot Bitcoin ETFs, interrupting a three-day trend of positive cash inflows. Every ETF, with the exception of Fidelity's FBTC and Ark Invest's ARKB, received zero inflows, resulting in a total inflow of $9.8 million for all funds combined.
BlackRock's IBIT ended its formidable 71-day inflow streak, halting its ascent on the roster of top ten ETFs with the longest active inflows. IBIT had earned its place on this exclusive list on Tuesday, having received uninterrupted inflows since its launch on January 11th.
Meanwhile, Grayscale's GBTC has continued to witness outflows, with over $130 million withdrawn on Wednesday alone. This ETF, which has faced consistent outflows since its inception, currently holds approximately 302,000 BTC, valued at over $19.3 billion and with a trading volume of $526 million.
Analysts have emphasized the importance of remaining composed during periods of zero ETF inflows, as they are a regular occurrence. Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart has stated that the vast majority of exchange-traded funds do not experience inflows on a daily basis, and this should not be a cause for concern.
