Bitcoin Plummets to Multi-Month Lows as Market Sentiment Crumbles

May 01, 2024 at 04:02 pm

On May 1, Bitcoin (BTC) plunged to new multi-month lows, reaching $57,082 on Bitstamp, a level not seen since February. Contributing factors include hawkish fiscal policy moves from U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and a legal judgment against Binance. Liquidations surged to $470 million in 24 hours, with BTC accounting for $160 million, leaving sentiment bearish.

Bitcoin Plunges to Multi-Month Lows, Market Sentiment Deteriorates

May 1, 2023 witnessed a significant downtrend in Bitcoin (BTC) prices, reaching multi-month lows as market sentiment took a sharp turn downward. BTC/USD traded at $57,082 on Bitstamp during the Asia session, marking its lowest level since February 2023.

The price decline, surpassing $57,000, has resulted in losses of over 20% during the second quarter of 2023. This downturn has been attributed to a combination of factors, including hawkish fiscal policy moves initiated by United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and a legal judgment against crypto exchange Binance and its founder, Changpeng Zhao.

Prior to the recent sell-off, Cointelegraph had reported on expectations that liquidity would be bolstered by Yellen's policies. However, subsequent actions to withdraw liquidity have negatively impacted risk assets, including Bitcoin.

Before the downward trend gained momentum, analysts had issued warnings about the potential for a decline in both Bitcoin and altcoin prices. Markets had been relatively stagnant since BTC/USD reached all-time highs in mid-March 2023.

Crucial support levels have now dissipated, with neither the $60,000 mark nor the realized price for short-term holders providing consolation to bullish investors.

"If panic is inevitable, it is advisable to wait until the two-month-old support level is breached," suggested prominent trader and analyst Rekt Capital.

Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, has outlined two potential paths for BTC's future trajectory.

"Historical data suggests that 'sell in May and go away' is a relevant strategy. The current price action appears to be a distribution phase," Edwards stated. "As long as we remain below $61.5K, the first scenario is more likely. A strong recovery above $61.5K would provide some hope for a bullish scenario. A sharp decline could also be beneficial for sustaining the bull market, presenting potential long-term opportunities."

According to CoinGlass, the total value of liquidations in the cryptocurrency market over the past 24 hours exceeded $470 million, with Bitcoin accounting for $160 million and Ethereum (ETH) accounting for $120 million.

Despite the monthly close in April occurring before BTC/USD fell below $60,000, April 2023 has nonetheless been the worst month for the pair since the depths of the 2022 bear market.
