Bitcoin has crashed below $50,000, marking a 48-day low. Triggered by sell-offs on Thursday, BTC plummeted from $54,900 to $48,300, leaving a significant 8% gap over the last 24 hours. Despite suggestions of a long-term bull market, overheated retail investors have contributed to short-term corrections and sideways movement.

Bitcoin's Steep Descent: A Market Correction Unfolds
On Thursday, April 29, 2021, Bitcoin (BTC), the preeminent cryptocurrency, witnessed a precipitous decline, dropping below the psychological support level of $50,000. This marked the lowest point for Bitcoin in 48 days, a significant setback from its recent all-time high of approximately $64,900.
The sell-off commenced at around 17:00 UTC, with Bitcoin's price plummeting from $54,900 to $51,500 on the Bitstamp exchange. A subsequent wave of selling pressure drove the price down further to $48,300. As of press time, Bitcoin was hovering around $49,200, indicating a loss of approximately $4,300 or 8% over the preceding 24 hours, according to data from CoinDesk's Bitcoin Price Page.
Analysts attribute the market correction to a combination of factors, including an overheated retail market and the need for a technical correction after a period of rapid appreciation. "On-chain data suggests that we're still in a long-term bull market," remarked Ki Young Ju, CEO of CryptoQuant, a blockchain analytics firm based in South Korea. "However, in the short term, we might experience a correction and sideways trading within a broad range, as retail investors have become over-enthusiastic."
The current downturn echoes a similar market correction that occurred in February, when Bitcoin's price declined by 21%, only to rally sharply and reach new highs. Notably, the loss of Bitcoin's 100-point daily moving average at around $49,400 could trigger further losses potentially reaching $46,000, based on technical analysis theory.
The sell-off has not been limited to Bitcoin. Other major cryptocurrencies have also experienced significant declines. XRP and Ether (ETH) have both depreciated by approximately 13% and 7%, respectively. Binance Coin (BNB) has also declined by 5.8%. Virtually all assets included in the CoinDesk 20, which represents the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization across eight major exchanges, have experienced price drops over the past 24 hours.
This market correction serves as a reminder of the inherent volatility associated with cryptocurrencies. While Bitcoin has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, it remains subject to significant fluctuations in price. Investors should exercise caution and invest only what they can afford to lose, while acknowledging that the market can be unpredictable.
