Bitcoin Miners Cash in on Runes Protocol Launch, Offset Halving Impact
Apr 22, 2024 at 01:27 pm
Despite the anticipated Bitcoin halving, miners have experienced a surge in revenue due to increased transaction fees. The launch of the Runes protocol, which utilizes Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) for issuing fungible tokens on Bitcoin, has spiked network fees, resulting in record-breaking miner earnings.

Bitcoin Miners Benefit from Runes Protocol Launch Amidst Halving Impact
On April 19, 2024, the highly anticipated Bitcoin halving occurred at 8:09 p.m. ET, reducing the block subsidy reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. While this event was anticipated to significantly lower Bitcoin miners' revenue, an unexpected surge in network transaction fees has propelled miner income to a record high.
Statistics from Ycharts reveal that on April 20, the day following the halving, miner revenue reached an unprecedented $107.8 million. Approximately 75% of this revenue, amounting to over $81 million, originated from transaction fees. The average transaction fee peaked at a record $127.97.
The surge in network fees is largely attributed to the launch of Runes, a protocol developed by Casey Rodamor, the creator of Bitcoin Ordinals. Runes leverages Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) as the basis for issuing fungible tokens on Bitcoin.
Runes enables users to inscribe immutable attributes and governance rules into tokens, with options for open or closed minting. Although initially intended to alleviate congestion caused by BRC-20 tokens, the overwhelming number of Runes projects launched post-release suggests an unintended opposite effect.
"In the initial 18 blocks alone, over $20 million in fees have been incurred, primarily due to Runes issuance," remarked Jimmy Song, an independent Bitcoin developer, in a blog post. "At this rate, Runes issuers would spend $150 million daily or $1 billion weekly."
Prior to the halving, miners earned approximately 6.5 BTC per block, comprising the 6.25 subsidy and negligible transaction fees. Post-halving, despite the 3.125 subsidy, block rewards have exceeded 7 BTC due to the elevated transaction fees.
As of Sunday evening, average transaction fees on Bitcoin have stabilized between 5 and 7 BTC per block, comparable to pre-halving levels.
"If fees decline further, which I do not anticipate, I expect a reduction in network hashrate," observed a market analyst on X. "This would be advantageous for efficient miners, with low energy costs being an added benefit."
The impact of Runes and the post-halving transaction fee surge has highlighted the evolving nature of Bitcoin mining revenue streams. While the halving reduced the block subsidy, the protocol's ability to generate value and support ancillary services, such as Runes, has demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of the Bitcoin mining industry.
