Bitcoin's Recent Market Decline: Factors and Implications

Dec 20, 2024 at 03:01 pm

Bitcoin, the world's leading cryptocurrency, has recently experienced a notable decline in its market value. This article delves into the factors contributing to this decline and explores its potential implications for the broader cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin's Recent Market Decline: Factors and Implications

Bitcoin briefly dipped below the $100,000 mark on Thursday, as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled plans to slow the pace of rate cuts in 2025.

The world’s leading cryptocurrency fell nearly 3% to trade at $99,633 by 01:04 ET (05:04 GMT), recovering slightly after hitting lows of $98,833. BTC last crossed the $100,000 level on December 12.

The decline comes a day after Bitcoin clocked in its best day of gains since March 2023, following news that يو إس بانك will begin offering cryptocurrency custody services to its asset management clients.

Bitcoin had staged a strong recovery in 2024, more than doubling in value from lows of around $45,000 hit in December 2023. However, the recent rally appears to be losing steam, with BTC अब तक गिर रहा है over 15% from highs of $118,600 hit earlier this month.

While Bitcoin managed to hold above the key psychological level of $99,000 on Thursday, further losses could be on the horizon if the Federal Reserve maintains its hawkish stance.

In prepared remarks to a central banking conference in Florida, Powell also highlighted the central bank's lack of interest in accumulating Bitcoin reserves, despite overtures from some lawmakers to include cryptocurrencies in the Fed’s balance sheet.

"We're not interested in buying Bitcoin. It's not our job, and I don't think it would be a good idea at all for federal reserve banks to be buying Bitcoin or any cryptocurrency and putting it on our balance sheet. I don't think that makes any sense at all."

Powell is set to participate in a second day of the conference on Friday, with investors likely to parse his remarks for any fresh cues on the Fed's monetary policy outlook for 2025.
