Bitcoin Hovers Near $65K Ahead of Halving; Fed's Stance Cools Risk Appetite

Apr 17, 2024 at 02:06 pm

Buoyed by a modest 2.9% gain, Bitcoin hovered around $64,269.5 on Wednesday. Lingering risk aversion due to elevated U.S. interest rate expectations kept crypto markets under pressure. The upcoming Bitcoin halving, poised to reduce the supply of new tokens, garnered attention as traders anticipated potential price appreciation. Chairman Jerome Powell's reiteration of higher-for-longer rates cast a shadow over crypto markets, which tend to perform better in low-interest environments.

Bitcoin Hovers Near $65K Ahead of Halving; Fed's Stance Cools Risk Appetite

Bitcoin Hovers Near $65K as Halving Event Looms, Fed Stance Dampens Risk Sentiment

The world's largest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, has edged slightly higher on Wednesday, continuing to fluctuate within a narrow trading range that has characterized the past month. However, risk sentiment remains fragile as concerns over the Federal Reserve's continued hawkish stance and persistent geopolitical tensions weigh on the market.

The strength of the U.S. dollar has been a headwind for cryptocurrency markets in recent sessions, particularly following the release of strong inflation and retail sales data, which have strengthened the Federal Reserve's resolve to maintain elevated interest rates. Fed Chair Jerome Powell's comments on Tuesday further reinforced this notion, indicating that the central bank is in no rush to begin cutting rates.

Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the lack of risk appetite has kept traders largely cautious, while the demand for safe-haven assets and expectations of higher interest rates have pushed the dollar to its highest levels in over five months.

At the time of writing (01:15 ET), Bitcoin is trading at $64,269.5, having gained approximately 2.9% over the past 24 hours. The token has been trapped in a trough between $60,000 and $70,000 since mid-March, after reaching a record high above $73,000.

Bitcoin Halving Event Takes Center Stage

Attention has now shifted to the upcoming Bitcoin halving event, which is anticipated to occur within the next few days with the generation of block number 840,000 on the Bitcoin blockchain. This event will reduce the rate at which new bitcoins are mined by half and is widely believed to reinforce the argument that the scarcity of the token will drive up its value.

While traders anticipate the halving to stimulate some gains in Bitcoin, it is worth noting that previous halving events have often resulted in limited near-term price increases.

Fed Chair Powell Reiterates Hawkish Stance

In a speech delivered on Tuesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell emphasized that persistent inflation has made the central bank reluctant to start lowering interest rates. His comments have prompted traders to further scale back their expectations for an interest rate cut in June.

According to the CME Fedwatch tool, markets now assign a less than 18% probability to a 25 basis point cut in June and an approximately 80% likelihood that the Fed will keep rates unchanged. This represents a significant shift from earlier expectations that a June rate cut was likely.

The prospect of higher interest rates for an extended period bodes poorly for cryptocurrency markets, which generally thrive in a low-rate, high-liquidity environment.

Altcoins See Modest Gains, But Mood Remains Subdued

Broader cryptocurrency prices have also risen on Wednesday, with Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, gaining 2.8% to trade at $3,110.40. Solana has surged by 7%, while XRP has remained relatively flat.

However, all three tokens have recently suffered losses, primarily due to the negative impact of higher-for-longer U.S. interest rates. Market sentiment remains subdued as the geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel continue to escalate, fostering fears of further market volatility.
