Bitcoin Dips Below $60,000 as Halving Event Approaches

Apr 18, 2024 at 04:59 am

Bitcoin has fallen below $60,000 just days before its upcoming halving, an event that reduces the reward for mining a block. The spot market order book on Binance shows strong demand below $60,000, suggesting support at these levels. The halving is expected to take place on April 20, with the countdown now at 302 blocks.

Bitcoin Loses Ground Below $60,000 as Halving Event Nears

April 17, 2024 (11:59 PM UTC) - Bitcoin (BTC) has fallen below the psychologically significant $60,000 level, hovering around $61,200 at the time of writing. This decline coincides with the impending halving event, scheduled to occur on April 20, which will reduce the block reward for Bitcoin miners from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bitcoin briefly surpassed $64,000 but subsequently lost significant value, marking a drop of over 3% within 24 hours. This represents the lowest price point for Bitcoin since early March.

Analysts attribute the recent sell-off to a combination of factors, including comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicating that interest rates are unlikely to decrease in the near future. Powell's stance on monetary policy, aimed at combatting inflation and a robust labor market, has instilled some caution among investors.

The halving event, which occurs every four years, has historically influenced Bitcoin's price trajectory. Halvings reduce the supply of new bitcoins entering the market, potentially driving up demand and increasing the cryptocurrency's value. As of 1:34 p.m. ET on April 17, the halving is estimated to be approximately 300 blocks away, with the previous halving having occurred on May 11, 2020.

The spot market order book for the BTC-USDT pair on Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange in terms of liquidity, reveals a clustering of bids below $60,000, indicating robust demand at those price levels. This suggests that further price declines may be mitigated in the short term.

Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has also experienced a decline, dropping below $3,000 and marking a 2.5% loss over the same period.

The derivatives market has witnessed notable liquidations, with $15.54 million liquidated between noon and 1:00 p.m. ET on April 17. Long position liquidations constituted approximately $8.4 million, while short positions accounted for $6.02 million. According to CoinGlass, a cryptocurrency data provider, 24-hour liquidations affected 67,301 traders, totaling $214.28 million.

As the halving event draws near, investors eagerly anticipate its potential impact on Bitcoin's price. Historically, halvings have been associated with both short-term price volatility and long-term value appreciation. However, the cryptocurrency market remains unpredictable, and investors should exercise caution when making investment decisions.
