Bitcoin (BTC) Surges Near $100,000 Mark, Experts Divided on Whether the Momentum Can Be Sustained
Nov 29, 2024 at 09:20 pm
Bitcoin (BTC) has recently surged to near the $100,000 mark, sparking excitement among investors eager to see it break this key psychological barrier.

As Bitcoin edges closer to the highly anticipated $100,000 mark, palpable optimism fills the air. However, some strategists remain cautious about whether this momentum can be sustained.
Fresh from scaling new heights, Bitcoin is currently trading just below $96,150, having briefly touched a high of $99,600 last week. This price movement has sparked excitement among investors, eager to see the world's leading cryptocurrency finally breach this key psychological barrier.
Several experts remain optimistic, pointing to continued strong demand from institutional investors. Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) is among those actively driving up institutional Bitcoin purchases.
In an interview with CNBC, Marathon CEO Fred Thiel highlighted the large-scale buyers still aggressively purchasing Bitcoin. Thiel’s comments come as Marathon recently raised a $1 billion zero-coupon bond, while companies like MicroStrategy also进行了大量机构购买的一部分,用于资助 1 亿美元的比特币购买。
Pointing out that institutions like Marathon are still aggressively buying up Bitcoin, Thiel suggests that there is ample demand to drive prices higher in the short term. He anticipates that while Bitcoin’s price may fluctuate, the overall trajectory will remain on an upward trend.
However, some experts caution that Bitcoin may face challenges at the $100,000 level. According to David Morrison, a senior market analyst at Trade Nation, this price point has become a significant hurdle for further gains.
“It feels as if it has become a high barrier for further price increases,” Morrison stated.
He also noted that Bitcoin's recent surge could inflate investor expectations, creating a false sense of security. Earlier this week, George Milling-Stanley, chief gold strategist at State Street Global Advisors, shared this sentiment, suggesting that Bitcoin is increasingly viewed as a speculative “return play,” attracting investors seeking capital gains rather than intrinsic value or utility in the cryptocurrency.
Several factors could be contributing to Bitcoin's price fluctuations. One factor, according to Andre Dragosch, head of research at Bitwise Asset Management, is the behavior of long-term holders beginning to cash in on the asset's unprecedented highs.
During this rally, long-term holders began selling significant amounts of Bitcoin, a trend that Dragosch highlights. A recent report by analyst platform Glassnode reveals that as Bitcoin approached the $100K level this month, long-term holders dumped over 500K BTC tokens. This increased supply in the market has tempered the upward price momentum.
Another factor is the launch of options on spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) this month, which has served to amplify speculative activity. Many investors are using options to bet on Bitcoin's price movements rather than buying Bitcoin directly, further fueling market volatility.
According to Mike Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital, the crypto market remains highly leveraged, which could increase the likelihood of a correction. However, Novogratz emphasizes that such corrections are typically short-lived and that Bitcoin's long-term upward trend could continue if favorable conditions persist.
