Bitcoin (BTC) Price Edged Up by 1.3% to $68,709.5 as the Market Remained Rangebound

Bitcoin price rose marginally on Monday, adding 1.3% over the past 24 hours to hit $68,709.5 by 01:39 ET (05:39 GMT). Yet, the market saw Bitcoin remain largely rangebound, oscillating within the $60,000 to $70,000 price territory that has been established since mid-March.

Despite the slight uptick in Bitcoin, the broader cryptocurrency market appeared tepid to the optimism around potential interest rate cuts by major central banks. Investors were keeping a close watch on the developments ahead of rate decisions by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada later in the week.

Bitcoin’s muted price action also came as Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador, secured his re-election for a second term over the weekend. Bukele made waves in the cryptocurrency space earlier in 2021 by spearheading the adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador. However, his recent swearing-in ceremony saw a noticeable absence of major references to Bitcoin, and any mentions of cryptocurrencies were missing from his social media profiles.

El Salvador's pioneering move to adopt Bitcoin was intended to spur economic growth, but the cryptocurrency did little to address the nation's underlying economic challenges. Bukele's ambitious plans to establish a “Bitcoin City” also failed to materialize as anticipated, encountering lukewarm interest from private investors. As a result, El Salvador turned to traditional debt markets earlier in the year, executing a $1 billion bond sale to meet its financing needs.

While El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings saw significant appreciation in value amid the broader cryptocurrency market rally observed in 2023 and early 2024, the broader cryptocurrency market showed muted activity on Monday.

Among the top-fiat-pairings, Ethereum (ETH) saw a modest uptick of 0.3% to hit $3,817.63, while other digital assets such as Solana (SOL) and Ripple (XRP) saw slight declines.

Within the realm of meme coins, Shiba Inu (SHIB) registered a decline of 1.6%, while Dogecoin (DOGE) managed to eke out a modest gain of 0.5%. Overall, the cryptocurrency market sentiment appeared relatively muted, notwithstanding the broader rally observed in risk-driven markets amid the prevailing expectations of interest rate cuts by major central banks.

Meanwhile, with data on inflation signaling some signs of moderation, market participants were increasingly anticipating a rate cut by the Federal Reserve in September, further shaping market sentiment and dynamics.
