Binance Survey Highlights a Shift in Crypto Security Behavior Across Asia

Binance Survey Highlights a Shift in Crypto Security Behavior Across Asia

A new large-scale survey conducted by Binance has revealed a substantial shift in crypto security behaviour among users in Asia. The Asia Crypto Security Survey, which gathered nearly 30,000 responses from users across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Asia, offers a rare, detailed snapshot of evolving habits, risk awareness, and expectations from the crypto community.

The survey, which was conducted in Q3 2024, found that 80.5% of users have enabled two-factor authentication (2FA), a positive sign that users are securing their accounts with foundational defences. Additionally, 73.3% said they double-check wallet addresses before making transfers, highlighting growing vigilance in routine transactions.

However, the findings also reveal a gap in the adoption of more advanced protections. Only 17.6% use address whitelisting, a powerful tool to restrict withdrawals to known wallets, while 21.5% employ anti-phishing codes, which protect users from fake login pages.

Alarmingly, 34.4% store private keys on internet-connected devices, and this number rises to 42% in Southeast Asia. This significant vulnerability calls for better education to encourage users to use hardware wallets or store keys offline.

Despite nearly 41% of respondents having experienced scams, over 84% expressed trust in exchange-based protections, such as Binance’s SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users). In cases of scams, 53.4% said they would immediately contact the exchange to freeze assets, demonstrating their readiness and growing faith in centralised platforms’ response systems.

However, users are becoming more proactive and have higher expectations for exchanges to take an active role in safeguarding the ecosystem. When asked about their top priorities for exchanges in the coming year, 62.5% cited real-time threat detection as crucial, and 50.4% demanded device-level threat alerts. This preference for an intelligence-driven, proactive approach is evident in the types of content users want to see — case studies (39.7%), practical guides (57.8%), and even gamified anti-scam simulations (61.3%).

Platforms like Binance are already stepping up to meet these needs, offering educational material, practical tips, and engaging formats to cater to diverse learning styles.

In the decentralised wallet space, security is just as critical. When asked about their most valued features in a crypto wallet, 62.8% of users rated enhanced private key protection as top priority, followed by better backup and recovery options with a score of 50.4%. Binance Wallet meets these needs through MPC (Multi-Party Computation) technology, which eliminates seed phrases and splits keys into encrypted parts that are easily stored and manageable. This approach helps users stay in control of their assets without the complexity often associated with private key management.

While awareness is growing, 55.8% of users felt that most security content is still too technical. Users want simpler, more localised case studies (39.7%), and platforms like Binance are stepping up to meet these needs, offering educational material, practical guides, and even gamified anti-scam simulations — a format supported by 61.3% of users.

This aligns with Chainalysis's findings, which showed a sharp decrease in crypto crime and a significant role played by Binance in preventing $4.2 billion in user losses and recovering $88 million in assets. Ultimately, the goal is to create a safer crypto ecosystem where users can participate with confidence and ease.
