Hewn Bread, renowned for its award-winning bread, plans to establish a third bakery in Winnetka this fall. Renowned Bakery "Hewn Bread" Expands with Third Location in Winnetka

In a testament to their exceptional artistry and dedication to the craft of breadmaking, co-owners Julie Matthei and Ellen King of Hewn Bread have announced plans to establish a third location in the affluent North Shore suburb of Winnetka, anticipated to open in autumn.

This expansion for Hewn Bread follows a string of accolades bestowed upon the bakery by esteemed culinary publications. In 2022, Food & Wine Magazine bestowed upon Hewn the coveted title of producing the "region's most inspiring bread," designating it as the premier bread purveyor in the state of Illinois. Additionally, the magazine previously recognized Hewn among its esteemed list of the 100 best bakeries nationwide.

Hewn's reputation for culinary excellence has not been limited to regional accolades. In 2021, Thrillist included the bakery in its meticulously curated list of "absolute best bakeries in Chicago," a roster primarily featuring pastry shops.

The bakery's forthcoming Winnetka location will occupy the former site of Bick's Coins, a beloved establishment that ceased operations at the commencement of the year. John Bickmore, the proprietor of Bick's Coins and a revered member of the North Shore Coin Club, initially relocated his business to Northbrook in 1983. Reflecting on his tenure as owner of the coin shop, Bickmore remarked, "It has undoubtedly been an extraordinary adventure."

Bickmore's entrepreneurial endeavors extended beyond numismatics; commencing in 1970, he spearheaded an early recycling program on the North Shore, subsequently operating it from the basement of Bick's Coins.
