The art of small talk in the workplace is fading, with younger generations preferring online communication over face-to-face conversations, new research reveals

The art of making small talk at work is on the decline, with younger generations favoring online communication over face-to-face conversations, according to new research.
A survey of 2,000 employed adults found that 74% struggle to make light conversation with colleagues in shared spaces like the office kitchen or lift. Nearly half admit to using platforms like WhatsApp, Teams, or email instead – even when sitting close to the person they're contacting.
This reliance on digital communication is particularly strong among Gen Z, with 40% admitting they feel more comfortable chatting online than in person. This drops slightly for Millennials (33%) and Gen X (24%).
For many younger workers, small talk feels foreign – 40% likened it to “learning a new language” due to the rise of remote and hybrid working. Meanwhile, office veterans are saddened by the loss of casual workplace chit-chat, believing it to be a key part of team bonding and professional development.
With that said, 22% of respondents say they're prioritizing being more sociable in 2025, with younger employees especially keen to step out of their comfort zones.
Small talk might feel awkward, but the research highlights its benefits. Over half (51%) believe these casual chats improve communication, with 49% saying they lead to a happier workforce and 48% linking them to better company morale.
More importantly, 38% say these interactions boost their mood, sparking feelings of happiness, relaxation, and confidence. Getting to know colleagues better (59%) and growing in self-assurance (48%) were also cited as advantages.
Anna Beheshti from Tilda, which commissioned the study to promote its quick lunch options, says: “With hybrid working now the norm, we don't get the same daily practice in social interactions as we used to when most of us were in the office full time.
Noting that the shift toward hybrid working has reduced opportunities for these “micro moments of connection.” She added, “Not everyone is naturally confident in starting a conversation, but those small, everyday exchanges can build relationships, boost confidence, and improve workplace culture.”
The brand is encouraging employees to rediscover “water cooler” moments in 202 benches. But despite the positives, nearly a third (28%) avoid walking into the office kitchen to escape potential small talk.
BBC Radio 1 presenter Melvin Odoom, partnering with Tilda for their ready-to-heat range, encourages workers to embrace small talk. Reflecting on his own experiences, he shared:
“One of my biggest fears recently, aside from the bugs and snakes, was meeting new people—despite talking for a living. But life’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and grabbing opportunities.
“A simple conversation can turn into a lifelong friendship, but you won't know unless you take that first step. The other person is probably just as nervous, so remind yourself of that—it makes starting a conversation much easier.”
To encourage connection, Tilda is offering customers the chance to win prizes like cooking masterclasses through their Tilda Ready-to-Heat range – making lunchtime the perfect opportunity to share a chat and reconnect in the workplace.
