Americans cleaning out their couches and cars should think twice before dumping their spare change into a vending machine or CoinStar machine as one simple quarter could net them as much as $7 million.

The rare bicentennial quarter with a key minting error is the coin that will fetch the multi-million dollar payday. The bicentennial quarter was minted in 1976 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the country.

The coin features the years "1776-1976" on it and it's the sought after coin has a minting error that makes it one of the rarest coins ever minted by the U.S. Treasury. No, before anyone gets too excited and starts digging through their coin jar, there are plenty of standard bicentennial quarters in circulation and they only fetch about $5-$6 on sites like eBay.

Now that's a significant return investment, considering the original value of the coin was 25 cents. The coins would-be collectors include the bicentennial quarter with the key feature being a rare silver variant with minting error. The reverse features a a colonial drummer paying homage to the American Revolution.

However, that sum is nothing in comparison with what the double eagle quarter would sell for, which is close to $18.9 million. The coin was minted in 1933 and has a unique feature on the back that appears to give the eagle a double tail. Most of these coins were recalled and melted after the treasury department realized their mistake. Currently, there is only 12 known to exist and the only privately held one was sold for $18.8 million in 2021 to an unknown collector. It is considered the rarest coin in the world.

The Flowing Hair Silver Dollar from 1794 hold the second spot for the rarest minted U.S coin fetching a price of over $10 million in 2010. The coin was the first silver coin minted in the U.S. following the revolution.

While most of the rarest coins in the world are not in circulation anymore, people can still come upon rare U.S. coins in the wild so to speak. These include the 1972 Doubled Die Lincoln, 2005-D 5C Speared Bison Jefferson Nickel and 1982 No Mint Mark Roosevelt Dime all of which can bring anywhere from $100 to $10,000.
