A1 Abraaj Restaurants Group has become the first publicly traded company in the Middle East to adopt bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset, signaling a major shift in regional finance.

A1 Abraaj Restaurants Group, a Bahraini company publicly listed on the Bahrain Bourse, has become the first Middle Eastern firm to adopt bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset. The company, known for its restaurant and food services, disclosed an initial purchase of 5 BTC and plans to expand its holdings.
A1 Abraaj, which reported $12.5 million in EBITDA in 2024, is also aiming to provide individuals in Middle Eastern countries and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) with an avenue to invest in bitcoin. This move follows a broader trend of institutions and countries globally turning to digital assets.
“Our initiative towards becoming a bitcoin treasury company showcases our company’s commitment to innovation and exploring new avenues that enhance shareholder value,” said Abdulla Isa, Chairman of the bitcoin treasury committee of A1 Abraaj Restaurants Group.
A1 Abraaj is partnering with IOX Capital, a U.S. firm that specializes in advising bitcoin treasury companies and has experience launching tokenized equity, to help A1 Abraaj allocate capital effectively for expanding its BTC portfolio. A dedicated bitcoin committee within A1 Abraaj will oversee governance, risk, and custody protocols for the company’s digital assets.
“I’d like to congratulate A1 Abraaj for adopting bitcoin at the corporate treasury level, finally enabling anyone in the GCC with a brokerage account to gain bitcoin exposure,” said Hans Thomas, CEO of IOX Capital. “We’re excited to be assisting A1 Abraaj in this endeavor.”
A1 Abraaj's decision to integrate bitcoin into its treasury follows a year of rapid development in the digital asset landscape. From hedge funds to global powers, institutional adoption of bitcoin has been a key focus.
