How to swap USDT for ETH on Coinbase Wallet? (In-app Exchange)
To swap USDT for ETH in Coinbase Wallet: open the app, go to “Trade,” ensure Ethereum Mainnet is selected, choose USDT→ETH, approve the token contract if needed, adjust slippage, then confirm the swap.
Mar 27, 2026 at 06:20 am
Accessing the In-App Exchange Feature
1. Open the Coinbase Wallet mobile application on your iOS or Android device.
2. Ensure you are logged into the correct wallet account where your USDT balance is visible.
3. Tap the 'Trade' tab located at the bottom navigation bar.
4. Confirm that your wallet network is set to Ethereum Mainnet, as USDT on Ethereum (ERC-20) and ETH both reside on this chain.
5. Select 'USDT' as the token you wish to swap from and 'ETH' as the token you wish to receive.
Reviewing Swap Details and Slippage Settings
1. The interface displays the current exchange rate, estimated output, network fee, and slippage tolerance.
2. By default, slippage is set to 0.5%, but users can manually adjust it between 0.1% and 5% depending on market volatility.
3. A warning appears if the price impact exceeds 2%, prompting users to confirm awareness before proceeding.
4. The estimated ETH amount updates in real time as you modify the USDT input value.
5. Network fees are quoted in ETH and reflect current Ethereum gas conditions; they appear directly below the swap preview.
Approving the USDT Token Contract
1. If this is your first time swapping USDT on Coinbase Wallet, you must approve the USDT smart contract to spend your tokens.
2. Approval requires signing a transaction with your wallet’s private key — no third-party custody is involved.
3. This step incurs a separate Ethereum gas fee and may take several seconds to confirm on-chain.
4. Once approved, the “Approve” button changes to “Swap”, indicating readiness for the next action.
5. Users retain full control over approval limits; the wallet does not auto-approve unlimited spending by default.
Executing the Swap Transaction
1. Tap 'Swap' after verifying all details including destination address, which defaults to your own wallet.
2. A confirmation modal shows final values: USDT deducted, ETH received, gas cost, and transaction deadline.
3. Signing the transaction initiates an on-chain interaction routed through Coinbase’s integrated decentralized liquidity aggregators.
4. The transaction hash appears immediately after signature submission, linking to Etherscan for real-time tracking.
5. ETH appears in your wallet balance once the transaction receives at least one block confirmation on Ethereum.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does my USDT balance show zero after approving but before swapping?A: Approval does not move funds — it only grants permission. Your USDT remains fully accessible until the actual swap executes.
Q: Can I swap USDT on Tron or Solana for ETH using Coinbase Wallet’s in-app exchange?A: No. The in-app exchange only supports swaps between tokens on the same network. ETH is native to Ethereum, so only ERC-20 USDT is compatible.
Q: What happens if the swap fails due to price movement?A: If slippage exceeds your selected tolerance before execution, the transaction reverts and gas is still consumed. You must resubmit with updated parameters.
Q: Is KYC required to use the in-app exchange in Coinbase Wallet?A: No. Coinbase Wallet is non-custodial and does not enforce identity verification for on-chain swaps. However, fiat on-ramps within the same app do require KYC.
