How to Check Bitcoin Network Fees Using Electrum Wallet
Electrum shows real-time Bitcoin fee estimates in sat/vB on the Send tab, with Low/Medium/High options, customizable rates, and a detailed preview before signing.

Accessing Fee Information in Electrum
1. Launch the Electrum wallet application on your device after ensuring it is updated to the latest stable version.
2. Open an existing wallet or create a new one if required; fee estimation requires an active wallet context.
3. Navigate to the Send tab located at the top of the interface; this section serves as the primary entry point for transaction configuration.
4. Enter a valid Bitcoin address and amount in the designated fields; do not click Send yet.
5. Observe the bottom-left corner of the window where Electrum displays real-time fee rate estimates in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB).
Understanding Fee Rate Display Options
1. Electrum shows three distinct fee levels: Low, Medium, and High, each corresponding to different confirmation time expectations.
2. These values are dynamically fetched from Electrum servers using the estimatesmartfee RPC call or equivalent backend logic.
3. Hovering over the fee label reveals a tooltip with approximate confirmation times—e.g., “~2 blocks” or “~10 blocks”—based on current mempool congestion.
4. The displayed rates reflect network-wide conditions, not wallet-specific settings or historical averages.
5. Users may manually override the suggested fee by clicking the gear icon next to the fee field and selecting Custom fee.
Verifying Fee Data Sources
1. Electrum does not rely on a single centralized API; instead, it aggregates fee suggestions from multiple connected servers.
2. Each server contributes its own estimate based on local observation of unconfirmed transactions in the mempool.
3. If discrepancies appear between servers, Electrum applies internal heuristics to select the most consistent value.
4. You can inspect which servers are currently used by going to Tools → Network → Servers and checking the status column.
5. Disabling automatic fee estimation forces Electrum to use only the fee set manually, removing all dynamic updates.
Transaction Preview and Fee Breakdown
1. After entering recipient details and selecting a fee level, click Preview before finalizing the transaction.
2. A pop-up window appears showing total fee in BTC and sat/vB, along with estimated confirmation time and transaction size in virtual bytes.
3. The preview includes a detailed breakdown of input count, output count, and script complexity impact on weight units.
4. Electrum calculates final fees using the formula: fee = size_in_vbytes × selected_rate_in_sat_vb.
5. This preview reflects actual on-chain cost—not simulated or hypothetical values—and matches what will be broadcast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does Electrum show fees before signing the transaction?A: Yes. Electrum displays fee estimates during address and amount entry, and provides exact fee calculation in the preview dialog prior to signing.
Q: Can I see historical fee rates inside Electrum?A: No. Electrum does not store or visualize past fee data. It only presents live, forward-looking estimates.
Q: Why does the fee rate change every few seconds?A: Electrum refreshes fee data periodically by polling connected servers. Mempool conditions shift rapidly, prompting frequent recalculations.
Q: Is the fee shown affected by my wallet’s UTXO selection?A: Not initially. The base estimate assumes typical UTXO patterns. However, once previewed, the final fee incorporates actual selected inputs and their associated weight.
