How to set up a MetaMask wallet? (Beginner’s Guide)
MetaMask is a self-custody Ethereum wallet that stores private keys locally, supports ERC tokens, and requires a secure 12-word recovery phrase—no KYC needed.
Jan 03, 2026 at 10:19 am
Understanding MetaMask Wallet Basics
1. MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet that functions as a browser extension and mobile application, enabling users to interact with Ethereum-based decentralized applications (dApps) directly from their web browser or smartphone.
2. It stores private keys locally on the user’s device, meaning MetaMask does not hold or manage users’ funds — it only provides the interface and cryptographic tools to sign transactions and access blockchain networks.
3. The wallet supports Ethereum (ETH) and all ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 tokens, making it one of the most widely adopted self-custody solutions in the Ethereum ecosystem.
4. Users receive a 12-word recovery phrase during setup — this phrase is the sole method to restore wallet access if the device is lost or corrupted.
5. MetaMask does not require identity verification or KYC procedures, preserving financial sovereignty but placing full responsibility for security on the user.
Installing the MetaMask Extension
1. Navigate to the official MetaMask website (metamask.io) and verify the URL matches exactly — avoid third-party download links to prevent malware-infected clones.
2. Click “Download” and select the appropriate browser extension version — currently supported for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge, and Opera.
3. After installation, click the puzzle-piece icon in the browser toolbar and pin the MetaMask extension for quick access.
4. The extension will launch a welcome screen prompting the user to either create a new wallet or import an existing one using a secret recovery phrase.
5. Choose “Create a Wallet” and proceed by accepting the terms and conditions — no email or personal information is required at this stage.
Creating and Securing Your Wallet
1. Set a strong password that is unique and not reused across other platforms — this password encrypts the local vault but does not recover the wallet.
2. Write down the 12-word secret recovery phrase on physical paper — never store it digitally, never take screenshots, and never share it with anyone, including support personnel.
3. Confirm the recovery phrase by selecting words in correct order — MetaMask will randomly shuffle the word positions to test accuracy.
4. Once confirmed, the wallet generates an Ethereum address displayed as a 42-character string starting with “0x” — this is your public address used to receive funds.
5. Verify the address by sending a small test transaction from another wallet or requesting ETH from a faucet like the Sepolia testnet faucet.
Connecting to Networks and Adding Tokens
1. By default, MetaMask connects to the Ethereum Mainnet — users can switch networks via the top-left dropdown menu to access testnets like Sepolia or sidechains like Polygon PoS.
2. To add custom RPC networks, click “Settings” → “Networks” → “Add Network” and input parameters such as network name, RPC URL, chain ID, currency symbol, and block explorer URL.
3. To add an ERC-20 token manually, click “Assets” → “Import Tokens”, paste the contract address, and confirm the token symbol and decimals — MetaMask auto-detects most details if the contract is verified on Etherscan.
4. Custom tokens appear under the “Tokens” tab only after they hold a non-zero balance — zero-balance tokens will not display unless explicitly imported.
5. Token lists can be toggled between “Popular” and “All” to view pre-approved assets or those added manually by the user.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use the same MetaMask wallet on both desktop and mobile?A: Yes — install MetaMask on mobile, select “I already have a wallet”, and restore using the same 12-word recovery phrase. Both instances control identical accounts and balances.
Q: What happens if I forget my MetaMask password?A: The password cannot be recovered. However, the wallet can be fully restored using the secret recovery phrase on any new device or fresh installation.
Q: Why does MetaMask show “Insufficient funds” even when I have ETH?A: This usually occurs because the transaction fee (gas) exceeds the available ETH balance. Ensure you retain enough ETH to cover gas costs before sending tokens.
Q: Is it safe to connect MetaMask to dApps?A: Connection itself is safe — it only shares your public address. Signing transactions requires explicit user approval. Never approve unsigned or unverified contract interactions.
