Why can't I see my NFTs in my MetaMask wallet extension?
MetaMask’s NFT support is limited to select EVM chains, relies on third-party APIs, and fails on non-standard, lazy-minted, or misconfigured contracts—causing silent invisibility.

Wallet Extension Limitations
1. MetaMask wallet extension does not natively support NFT display for all blockchains. It only shows assets on Ethereum, Polygon, BSC, and a few other EVM-compatible chains by default.
2. NFTs minted on non-EVM chains like Solana, Cardano, or Tezos will never appear in the MetaMask interface — the extension lacks the necessary token standards integration and metadata parsing logic for those ecosystems.
3. Even on supported chains, MetaMask relies on third-party APIs such as OpenSea’s or Rarible’s asset endpoints to fetch NFT data. If those services are rate-limited, down, or have deprecated endpoints, NFT thumbnails and listings vanish silently.
4. The extension does not automatically scan all contract addresses associated with your wallet. It only checks known ERC-721 and ERC-1155 registries, missing custom or newly deployed contracts unless manually added.
Network Configuration Issues
1. Your MetaMask extension may be connected to the wrong network. An NFT minted on Arbitrum One will remain invisible if the active network is set to Ethereum Mainnet.
2. Custom RPC configurations sometimes omit required fields like block explorer URLs or chain IDs that MetaMask uses to resolve NFT ownership proofs. Missing or malformed values break token detection.
3. Some Layer 2 networks require manual token import even after correct network selection. Unlike fungible tokens, NFTs do not auto-populate via token lists — each collection must be individually acknowledged.
4. Network timeouts during initial sync can truncate NFT indexing. MetaMask caches partial results and does not retry failed NFT scans unless the user forces a full refresh through account reset or cache clearing.
Contract and Standard Compliance
1. Contracts violating ERC-721 or ERC-1155 specifications — such as missing supportsInterface, incorrect event signatures, or broken tokenURI return logic — prevent MetaMask from recognizing them as valid NFTs.
2. Some projects deploy “NFT-like” tokens using non-standard interfaces like ERC-998 or custom extensions. These are intentionally excluded from MetaMask’s detection heuristics due to security and compatibility constraints.
3. Lazy-minted NFTs stored off-chain via IPFS or Arweave may return empty or inaccessible metadata when queried. MetaMask treats such responses as invalid and drops the asset from view without warning.
4. Proxy-based contracts with upgradeable logic often misreport ownerOf() outputs during migration windows. MetaMask reads stale or null address returns and excludes the token from rendering.
Browser and Cache Behavior
1. Browser extensions like ad blockers or privacy tools interfere with MetaMask’s ability to load external asset metadata. Requests to OpenSea or Cloudflare gateways get blocked silently.
2. Local storage corruption in Chrome or Firefox can persist outdated NFT state. Old contract addresses may remain cached while new ones fail to register, resulting in partial visibility.
3. Incognito mode disables persistent storage access. Any NFT-related session data — including fetched image URIs or ownership confirmations — disappears upon tab close.
4. Multiple wallet accounts under one MetaMask instance share the same UI context. Switching between accounts does not always trigger full NFT re-indexing, causing stale views across profiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does MetaMask support NFTs on Base or Linea?A: Yes — but only after adding the network manually and ensuring the NFT contract conforms strictly to ERC-721 or ERC-1155. Base requires explicit API endpoint configuration in advanced settings.
Q: Can I view my NFTs without connecting to OpenSea?A: Yes — you can use third-party explorers like Etherscan or Polygonscan directly by pasting your wallet address and navigating to the NFT tab.
Q: Why do some NFTs show up on mobile but not desktop?A: MetaMask Mobile uses a different indexing engine powered by its own backend infrastructure, while the browser extension depends entirely on decentralized API calls and local parsing logic.
Q: Is there a way to force-refresh NFTs in MetaMask?A: Yes — disconnect and reconnect your wallet to the current network, then clear site data for metamask.io in browser settings before reloading.
