How to use MetaMask with a test network?
Connect MetaMask to a test network like Sepolia, obtain free test ETH from a faucet, and safely switch between networks to test dApps without risking real funds.

Connecting MetaMask to a Test Network
1. Open the MetaMask browser extension and ensure you are logged into your wallet. If you don’t have an account, create one using the setup wizard. Once inside, locate the network dropdown menu at the top of the interface, which usually displays 'Ethereum Mainnet' by default.
2. Click on the network selector and scroll down to find available test networks such as 'Goerli Test Network' or 'Sepolia Test Network.' Selecting one of these will automatically configure MetaMask with the necessary parameters if the network is already supported.
3. If the desired test network isn’t listed, you can add it manually. Choose 'Add Network' from the dropdown menu. This opens a form where you must enter specific details including the network name, new RPC URL, chain ID, currency symbol, and block explorer URL.
4. For example, when adding the Sepolia network manually, input the following: Network Name – Sepolia, New RPC URL – https://sepolia.infura.io/v3/YOUR_INFURA_PROJECT_ID, Chain ID – 11155111, Currency Symbol – ETH, and Block Explorer URL – https://sepolia.etherscan.io.
5. After filling in all fields correctly, click 'Save.' MetaMask will switch to the newly added test network, allowing you to interact with decentralized applications deployed on that environment.
Obtaining Test Ether from a Faucet
1. Once connected to a test network, you’ll need test ether (ETH) to perform transactions. Real ETH cannot be used on testnets, but free test tokens are distributed through online faucets.
2. Navigate to a trusted faucet service such as the Goerli Faucet hosted by Alchemy or the Sepolia Faucet on the official Ethereum Foundation website.
3. Enter your MetaMask public address in the provided field on the faucet site. Some faucets may require you to complete a CAPTCHA or authenticate via social media to prevent abuse.
4. Submit the request and wait for the test ETH to arrive in your wallet. This typically takes less than a minute, though delays can occur during peak usage times.
5. Refresh your MetaMask balance to see the updated amount. You can now use this test ETH for deploying smart contracts, interacting with dApps, or testing transaction functionality without spending real funds.
Switching Between Networks Safely
1. MetaMask allows users to switch between multiple networks seamlessly. Always confirm the active network before initiating any transaction to avoid sending funds to incompatible chains.
2. When switching, click the network dropdown and select the desired environment—whether it’s Ethereum Mainnet, a testnet, or a custom configuration. The wallet interface will update to reflect the selected network.
3. Be cautious when copying contract addresses or interacting with dApps. Addresses valid on one network may not exist or behave differently on another. Double-check URLs and contract deployments specific to the current network.
4. Some decentralized applications automatically detect your network and prompt you to switch if needed. Heed these warnings, especially when participating in testing phases or using beta versions of platforms.
5. Consider renaming custom networks within MetaMask to clearly distinguish them—for example, labeling a custom RPC as 'Polygon Mumbai Testnet'—to reduce confusion during development workflows.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I verify that MetaMask is connected to the correct test network?Check the network name displayed at the top of the MetaMask extension. Confirm that your wallet address shows a balance after receiving test ETH from a faucet. Interact with a known dApp on that network to validate connectivity.
Can I lose real money while using a test network? No, test networks use non-valuable tokens. Transactions and interactions do not affect your real funds. However, never send real ETH to a testnet address, as those funds will be lost permanently.
Why isn’t my faucet request working?Faucets often limit the number of requests per address over a time period. Ensure you’re on the correct network, using a valid wallet address, and not exceeding rate limits. Try alternative faucets if one isn’t responding.
What should I do if a test network disappears from MetaMask?Go to Settings > Networks and ensure 'Show test networks' is enabled. If still missing, re-add the network manually using the correct RPC and chain details provided by the network’s official documentation.
