How to connect MetaMask to dYdX? (Perpetual trading)
dYdX is a decentralized perpetual futures exchange on Ethereum and StarkEx, using smart contracts, off-chain order books, on-chain settlement, and USDC-denominated trading pairs.

Understanding dYdX Perpetual Protocol
1. dYdX is a decentralized exchange built specifically for perpetual futures trading on Ethereum and Layer 2 solutions like StarkEx.
2. The platform operates without centralized custody, relying instead on smart contracts and off-chain order books with on-chain settlement.
3. Users interact directly with the protocol’s contracts using Ethereum-compatible wallets such as MetaMask.
4. Trading pairs include BTC-USD, ETH-USD, and several altcoin derivatives, all settled in USDC.
5. Margin requirements, leverage settings, and position liquidation logic are enforced by on-chain mechanisms verified by the StarkEx validity proofs.
Prerequisites for MetaMask Integration
1. A fully synced MetaMask extension installed in Chrome, Firefox, or Brave browser is mandatory.
2. At least 0.01 ETH must be held in the wallet to cover gas fees for initial contract interactions on Ethereum mainnet or L2 bridges.
3. USDC tokens must be available either on Ethereum mainnet or deposited into the dYdX Layer 2 network via the official bridge interface.
4. Network configuration in MetaMask must include the correct RPC endpoint: for StarkEx-based dYdX v4, users connect to the dYdX Chain — a Cosmos-based sovereign chain — requiring manual network addition with chain ID 1337.
5. Wallet permissions must allow signing of typed data messages, as dYdX uses EIP-712 signatures for order placement and approvals.
Step-by-Step Connection Process
1. Navigate to app.dydx.trade and ensure the browser environment supports Web3 injection.
2. Click the “Connect Wallet” button located in the top-right corner of the interface.
3. Select “MetaMask” from the available wallet options; this triggers a pop-up window requesting account access.
4. Confirm the connection request inside MetaMask, approving read access to your public address and network status.
5. Once connected, the UI displays your wallet address and balance; if using dYdX Chain, you may need to sign an additional initialization message to register your account on-chain.
Funding Your dYdX Account
1. After connection, go to the “Deposit” section and choose whether to deposit USDC from Ethereum mainnet or transfer from another dYdX Chain address.
2. For Ethereum deposits, approve the USDC contract first, then submit the deposit transaction — it will appear as a pending transfer until finalized on StarkEx.
3. Deposits made directly to dYdX Chain require sending USDC to your own dYdX Chain address, visible under the “Account” tab.
4. Minimum deposit amounts vary per asset but start at 10 USDC for most stablecoin transfers.
5. All deposits are reflected instantly in the trading interface once confirmed on the respective chain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use MetaMask Mobile to connect to dYdX?A: No. dYdX does not support MetaMask Mobile due to limitations in deep-linking and signature handling for StarkEx-specific typed data. Desktop MetaMask is required.
Q: Why does dYdX ask for two separate signature requests after connecting?A: The first signs wallet ownership; the second initializes your subaccount on StarkEx or registers your address on dYdX Chain — both are necessary for trading eligibility.
Q: Is my private key ever exposed during the connection process?A: Never. MetaMask only shares your public address and signs messages locally. dYdX never receives or stores private keys.
Q: What happens if I change networks in MetaMask while connected to dYdX?A: The app automatically disconnects and displays a network mismatch warning. You must reselect the correct network — dYdX Chain (ID 1337) — before reconnecting.
