How to use Coinbase Wallet for cross-chain USDC transfers? (CCTP Guide)
CCTP enables native, permissionless USDC transfers across EVM chains—burning on source and minting on destination—natively supported in Coinbase Wallet.
Feb 16, 2026 at 01:39 am
Understanding Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP)
1. CCTP is a permissionless, open-source protocol developed by Circle to enable native USDC transfers across EVM-compatible blockchains without wrapping or bridging.
2. It relies on message passing between chains through shared attestation services, ensuring that USDC is burned on the source chain and minted on the destination chain.
3. Coinbase Wallet integrates CCTP natively, allowing users to initiate cross-chain USDC moves directly from the mobile interface without third-party dApps.
4. Each transfer requires confirmation on both origin and destination chains, with finality dependent on the underlying consensus mechanisms of those chains.
5. CCTP does not support non-EVM chains like Solana or Bitcoin; it operates exclusively on networks such as Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon.
Setting Up Coinbase Wallet for CCTP
1. Download the official Coinbase Wallet app from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store—avoid third-party APKs or unofficial sources.
2. Create a new wallet or import an existing one using a 12-word recovery phrase; never share this phrase with any service or website.
3. Ensure your wallet is connected to at least two supported CCTP chains—for example, Ethereum Mainnet and Base—via the network switcher in the bottom navigation bar.
4. Fund your source chain wallet with sufficient native gas tokens: ETH on Ethereum, ETH on Base, and so on—CCTP itself does not cover gas fees.
5. Verify that your wallet displays USDC balances correctly on each chain, confirming token contract addresses match Circle’s official deployments.
Initiating a CCTP Transfer in Coinbase Wallet
1. Tap the “Send” button while viewing your USDC balance on the source chain.
2. Enter the recipient’s wallet address—this must be the same address on both chains, as CCTP does not alter address formats across networks.
3. Select “Cross-chain transfer” instead of standard send; the interface will display available destination chains supporting CCTP.
4. Choose the target chain and confirm the estimated time, gas cost, and burn/mint confirmation details shown before signing.
5. Approve the transaction using your wallet’s signature prompt; the burn transaction appears first on the source chain, followed by minting on the destination after attestation.
Tracking and Verifying CCTP Transfers
1. After initiating, tap the transaction history icon and locate the CCTP entry labeled with dual-chain identifiers like “Ethereum → Base”.
2. Use the embedded explorer link to view the burn transaction hash on Etherscan and the corresponding mint event on BaseScan.
3. Monitor the “Attested” status badge—this confirms Circle’s attestation service has verified the burn and authorized minting.
4. Check your destination chain balance only after the mint transaction has at least one block confirmation; delays may occur during high network congestion.
5. If the mint does not appear within 30 minutes, verify the recipient address was entered identically on both chains and inspect the attestation status via Circle’s public CCTP dashboard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use CCTP to send USDC from Base to Ethereum using Coinbase Wallet?Yes. Coinbase Wallet supports bidirectional CCTP transfers between all officially supported chains, including Base and Ethereum.
Q: Why does my CCTP transfer show “Pending Attestation” for over 20 minutes? This usually occurs when the source chain transaction is confirmed but Circle’s attestation service has not yet processed the burn event—check network health and retry if it exceeds 45 minutes.
Q: Do I need to approve USDC spending before every CCTP transfer? No. CCTP uses a single, reusable approval for the CCTP MessageTransmitter contract, not per-transfer USDC allowances.
Q: Is CCTP available when sending USDC to wallets on zkSync Era or Blast? No. As of current implementation, zkSync Era and Blast are not integrated into Circle’s CCTP registry; only listed EVM chains are supported.
