How to bridge assets to Taiko? (Testnet tutorial)

Taiko’s Alpha-3 testnet is a decentralized, Ethereum-equivalent ZK-rollup using recursive zk-SNARKs for secure, EVM-compatible bridging between Sepolia and Taiko L2.

Understanding Taiko Testnet Architecture

1. Taiko is a decentralized, Ethereum-equivalent ZK-rollup designed to inherit Ethereum’s security while enabling high-throughput execution.

2. The current active testnet is called Alpha-3, which supports full EVM compatibility and permissionless block proposal.

3. Unlike centralized bridges, Taiko’s native bridging mechanism relies on a combination of sequencer commitments and recursive zk-SNARK proofs verified on Ethereum Mainnet.

4. Users interact with the Taiko L1 Bridge contract deployed on Goerli (for legacy testing) or Sepolia (current recommended network).

5. All bridge operations require ETH for gas on both L1 and L2, and tokens must be whitelisted in the Taiko governance system before cross-chain transfer.

Setting Up Your Wallet Environment

1. Install MetaMask and ensure it supports custom RPCs; disable any token auto-detection features that may interfere with testnet token displays.

2. Add the Sepolia network using chain ID 11155111, RPC URL https://sepolia.infura.io/v3/YOUR_INFURA_KEY, and currency symbol SEP.

3. Add the Taiko Alpha-3 testnet with chain ID 167005, RPC URL https://rpc.test.taiko.xyz, and block explorer https://explorer.test.taiko.xyz.

4. Fund your wallet with Sepolia ETH via a faucet like the official Sepolia faucet or third-party services such as Alchemy or QuickNode faucets.

5. Obtain Taiko testnet ETH by interacting with the Taiko faucet dApp at https://faucet.test.taiko.xyz — requires signing a message with your wallet.

Initiating an Asset Bridge Transaction

1. Navigate to the official Taiko bridge interface at https://bridge.test.taiko.xyz and connect your MetaMask wallet.

2. Select Sepolia ETH as the source asset and confirm your wallet is set to Sepolia network.

3. Enter the amount to bridge — minimum is 0.001 ETH; maximum per transaction is capped at 10 ETH during testnet phase.

4. Click “Bridge” and approve two transactions: first the ERC-20 approval (if bridging ERC-20 tokens), then the actual deposit call to the L1 bridge contract.

5. Wait for the deposit to be included in a Taiko block; status updates appear live on the bridge UI and can be tracked via the Taiko Explorer using the transaction hash.

Withdrawing Assets Back to Ethereum

1. Switch MetaMask to the Taiko Alpha-3 network and open the bridge interface again.

2. Choose “Withdraw” mode and select the asset held on Taiko — only assets originally deposited via the official bridge are eligible.

3. Input the withdrawal amount and confirm the transaction; this triggers a provable L2 state transition request.

4. After the Taiko prover generates the validity proof, the withdrawal enters the 7-day challenge period on Sepolia, enforced by the L1 bridge contract.

5. Once the challenge window expires, users manually trigger the “Finalize Withdrawal” function on Sepolia to receive funds back into their wallet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I bridge ERC-20 tokens other than ETH on Taiko testnet?A: Yes, but only tokens explicitly added to the Taiko testnet token list. Check https://github.com/taikoxyz/taiko-mono/tree/main/packages/protocol/test/tokens for the current whitelist.

Q: Why does my bridged ETH not appear in my Taiko wallet balance immediately?A: Finality on Taiko Alpha-3 requires at least one confirmed block containing your deposit. Delays may occur if the sequencer is temporarily offline or under load.

Q: Is it possible to use a hardware wallet for bridging on Taiko testnet?A: Yes, Ledger and Trezor devices are supported via MetaMask’s hardware wallet integration, provided firmware and app versions are up to date.

Q: What happens if I send ETH directly to the Taiko L2 address without using the bridge?A: Funds sent outside the official bridge flow are irrecoverable. Taiko L2 addresses are not pre-funded and do not support direct deposits.
