How to add the Arbitrum network to MetaMask? How to bridge funds to it?

To use Arbitrum in MetaMask, add the network manually with RPC URL `https://arb1.arbitrum.io/rpc`, Chain ID `42161`, and symbol `ETH`, then bridge assets via [bridge.arbitrum.io](https://bridge.arbitrum.io).

Adding Arbitrum Network to MetaMask

1. Open MetaMask and click the network selector dropdown, usually located at the top of the interface.

2. Select “Add Network” or “Add Network Manually” if Arbitrum is not listed among default options.

3. Enter the official Arbitrum One RPC details: Network Name Arbitrum One, RPC URL https://arb1.arbitrum.io/rpc, Chain ID 42161, Currency Symbol ETH, and Block Explorer URL https://arbiscan.io.

4. Confirm the addition. MetaMask will save the configuration and switch to the Arbitrum network automatically.

5. Verify the change by checking the network name in the top bar—it should now display Arbitrum One.

Using Official Arbitrum Bridge

1. Navigate to the official Arbitrum bridge at https://bridge.arbitrum.io while connected to Ethereum Mainnet in MetaMask.

2. Connect your wallet using the “Connect Wallet” button. Ensure you are on Ethereum, not Arbitrum, before initiating the bridge.

3. Select the token to bridge—most users start with ETH—and enter the amount. The interface displays estimated gas fees and confirmation time.

4. Click “Deposit”. This triggers a Layer 1 transaction requiring Ethereum network confirmation.

5. After the L1 transaction settles, the bridge processes the message. Funds appear on Arbitrum typically within 10–20 minutes, though finality may take longer depending on congestion.

Alternative Bridging Options

1. Third-party bridges like Across Protocol and Synapse support Arbitrum and offer faster transfers for certain tokens.

2. Some decentralized exchanges such as SushiSwap and Uniswap integrate native bridging flows directly from their interfaces when swapping across chains.

3. Wallet-native tools like Coinbase Wallet provide one-click Arbitrum bridging for supported assets without leaving the app.

4. Cross-chain aggregators including Orbiter Finance allow routing through multiple bridges to optimize cost and speed for stablecoin and ERC-20 transfers.

Verifying Transactions on Arbitrum

1. After bridging, open https://arbiscan.io and paste your Arbitrum wallet address into the search bar.

2. Check the “Transactions” tab to confirm receipt. Deposits from Ethereum appear as incoming transactions with “Bridge” or “L1->L2” labels.

3. Look for successful status indicators—green checkmarks—and verify block confirmations. Arbitrum One requires fewer confirmations than Ethereum for finality.

4. Use the “Token Holdings” section to ensure balances reflect expected amounts, especially for non-ETH tokens bridged via custom contracts.

5. Cross-reference with the original Ethereum transaction hash on https://etherscan.io to trace deposit initiation and message relay status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I bridge USDC directly from Ethereum to Arbitrum using the official bridge?A: Yes, but only the Ethereum-native USDC (USDC.e) is supported. Circle’s native Arbitrum USDC must be minted separately via Circle’s portal.

Q: Why does my bridged ETH show as “ETH” but not appear in my MetaMask balance immediately?A: MetaMask may not auto-detect new tokens. Manually add the Arbitrum ETH contract address 0x82aF49447D8a07e3bd95BD0d56f35241523fBab1 as a custom token.

Q: Do I need ETH on Arbitrum to pay for gas after bridging?A: Yes. ETH deposited via the bridge is automatically usable as gas. No separate ETH acquisition is required unless you’ve bridged only tokens without ETH.

Q: What happens if I send tokens to an Arbitrum address before adding the network to MetaMask?A: The funds remain safely on-chain. Adding Arbitrum network and importing the same seed phrase will restore access—no loss occurs.
