How to Use Margin Trading on Kraken? Beginner Guide
To trade on margin at Kraken, users need Intermediate KYC, 2FA, a verified payment method, and must accept the Margin Agreement—U.S., Canadian, and Japanese residents are excluded.

Account Eligibility and Verification Requirements
1. Users must complete at least Intermediate KYC verification to access margin trading features on Kraken.
2. A verified bank account or supported payment method is mandatory for funding margin positions.
3. Users residing in jurisdictions where margin trading is prohibited—including the United States, Canada, and Japan—are automatically restricted from this service.
4. Kraken requires users to acknowledge and accept the Margin Trading Agreement before enabling the feature.
5. Two-factor authentication (2FA) must be active on the account; accounts without 2FA are denied margin access.
Navigating the Margin Trading Interface
1. Log in to Kraken and switch to Kraken Pro interface via the top navigation bar.
2. Click the “Trade” tab, then select “Margin” from the dropdown menu beside the order book.
3. Choose a supported margin pair—BTC/USD, ETH/USD, XRP/USD, and ADA/USD are among the most liquid options.
4. The interface displays real-time margin balance, used margin, available margin, and liquidation price indicators in green font.
5. Order types available include limit, market, stop-loss, and take-profit—all configurable with leverage selection ranging from 2x to 5x depending on asset class.
Funding and Leverage Configuration
1. Deposit base currency (e.g., USD) into the margin wallet using the “Funding” section before initiating any position.
2. Transfer funds from the main wallet to the margin wallet manually—Kraken does not auto-allocate balances across wallets.
3. Leverage is set per order: selecting 3x on an ETH/USD buy order multiplies exposure but also scales margin requirements proportionally.
4. Initial margin is calculated as position value divided by selected leverage; maintenance margin thresholds vary by asset and are displayed live in the margin panel.
5. Negative equity triggers immediate liquidation; Kraken applies no negative balance protection for retail margin users.
Risk Management Tools and Alerts
1. Customizable price-based alerts can be set for entry, exit, or liquidation proximity using Kraken’s notification system.
2. Real-time liquidation price updates appear next to each open position and adjust dynamically with market movement.
3. Margin call warnings activate when equity falls below 110% of maintenance margin—users receive email and in-app notifications.
4. Auto-deleveraging is disabled; all liquidations are executed against Kraken’s internal order book at prevailing market rates.
5. Historical margin usage and position PnL are accessible under “Account History” with CSV export capability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Does Kraken offer isolated margin or only cross-margin? Kraken uses cross-margin exclusively for retail margin trading. There is no isolated margin mode available.
Q2. Can I hold a margin position overnight without rollover fees? Yes. Kraken does not charge overnight financing fees on margin positions held in USD or EUR pairs.
Q3. What happens if my margin position triggers liquidation during low liquidity? Liquidation orders execute at the best available price within Kraken’s order book—even if slippage exceeds 5%.
Q4. Are margin trades reported to tax authorities in supported jurisdictions? Yes. Kraken provides downloadable trade reports compliant with IRS Form 8949, HMRC SA108, and CRA T5008 standards.
