How to Use Conditional Orders for BTC on Gate.io? Complete Trading Tutorial
Gate.io’s conditional orders—stop-limit, take-profit, and trailing-stop—automate BTC trades by triggering only when preset price conditions are met, enhancing risk control and profit capture.

Understanding Conditional Orders
1. Conditional orders on Gate.io allow traders to automate trade execution when predefined market conditions are met.
2. These orders include stop-limit, take-profit, and trailing-stop types, each serving distinct risk management or profit capture purposes.
3. Unlike regular limit or market orders, conditional orders remain inactive until the trigger price is reached on the BTC/USDT or other BTC-denominated pairs.
4. Trigger prices are monitored in real time against the last traded price, not the bid or ask — this ensures consistency across all order types.
5. Once triggered, the conditional order converts into a standard limit or market order depending on its configuration, subject to current liquidity and slippage.
Setting Up a Stop-Limit Order for BTC
1. Navigate to the BTC/USDT trading interface on Gate.io Web or App, then select “Advanced” or “Conditional” tab beside the order book.
2. Choose “Stop-Limit” from the order type dropdown menu to begin configuration.
3. Input the stop price — for a buy order, this must be higher than the current market price; for a sell order, it must be lower than the current market price.
4. Set the limit price — this defines the maximum acceptable buy price or minimum acceptable sell price after triggering. It must be within 15% of the stop price to prevent invalid submissions.
5. Enter the quantity in BTC, confirm the order preview shows correct trigger logic and fee estimation, then click “Place Order”.
Configuring Take-Profit Orders on BTC Positions
1. Access the “Positions” section if holding an open BTC perpetual or futures position, then locate the “Add TP/SL” button next to the active contract.
2. Select “Take-Profit” and choose between limit or market execution mode based on urgency and price sensitivity.
3. Enter the target price where you wish to close part or all of your BTC position automatically — this value is validated against current mark price before submission.
4. Specify the size as either fixed BTC amount or percentage of current position, ensuring it does not exceed available margin balance.
5. Click “Confirm” — the system registers the instruction and displays it under active conditional orders with status “Pending” until triggered.
Using Trailing-Stop for BTC Trades
1. In the BTC/USDT spot or perpetual trading view, open the conditional order panel and select “Trailing-Stop”.
2. Define the activation price — this is the level at which the trailing mechanism begins tracking price movement.
3. Input the trailing distance in USDT or percentage points — for BTC/USDT, a common setting is 85 USDT for long positions and 120 USDT for short positions, reflecting typical intraday volatility ranges.
4. The system dynamically adjusts the stop price upward (for longs) or downward (for shorts) as BTC moves favorably, locking in gains without manual intervention.
5. When BTC reverses and hits the trailing threshold, the order triggers as a market order to exit immediately at best available price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I modify a conditional order after placement?A: Yes, active conditional orders can be edited or canceled directly from the “Conditional Orders” tab under “Trade” — no withdrawal delay applies.
Q: Do conditional orders consume margin before triggering?A: No, only triggered orders affect margin usage; unexecuted conditional orders hold no capital requirement or position exposure.
Q: Why did my stop-limit order fail to execute despite price crossing the stop level?A: This occurs when the limit price was unreachable after triggering — for example, insufficient liquidity at the specified limit or rapid price slippage beyond the spread tolerance.
Q: Is there a limit to how many conditional orders I can place simultaneously?A: Gate.io allows up to 20 active conditional orders per account across all BTC-related trading pairs and contract types.
