How to Check Funding Rates on Bybit? (Futures Fees)

Bybit’s funding rates—calculated every 8 hours as interest + premium index—anchor perpetuals to spot prices; positive rates mean longs pay shorts, impacting holding costs and strategy.

Mar 18, 2026 at 07:59 am

Understanding Funding Rates on Bybit

1. Funding rates are periodic payments exchanged between long and short traders in perpetual futures contracts. They serve to anchor the perpetual contract price close to the underlying spot index price.

2. Bybit calculates funding every 8 hours—at 00:00 UTC, 08:00 UTC, and 16:00 UTC. The rate is applied at the exact timestamp, and positions open at that moment are subject to the charge or credit.

3. The funding rate consists of two components: the interest rate (typically 0.01% per 8 hours) and the premium index, which reflects market sentiment and basis deviation.

4. A positive funding rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means shorts pay longs. Traders must monitor this to assess holding cost implications for extended positions.

5. Bybit displays real-time funding rates on its trading interface, directly beneath the order book and above the chart area for each perpetual contract.

Locating Funding Rate Data on the Bybit Platform

1. Navigate to the Bybit website or open the Bybit app and log into your account.

2. Select Derivatives from the top navigation bar, then choose USDT Perpetual or COIN-M Perpetual, depending on your preferred margin type.

3. Click on any active contract—such as BTCUSDT or ETHUSDT—to load its trading view.

4. Scroll to the right-side panel labeled Market Data. Here you will find Funding Rate, Next Funding Time, and Predicted Funding Rate.

5. Historical funding data is accessible via the Funding History tab under the Contract Details section—this includes timestamps, actual rates applied, and direction of payment.

Funding Rate Calculation Mechanics

1. Bybit uses the formula: Funding Rate = Interest Rate + Premium Index, where the interest rate is fixed at 0.01% per 8 hours unless adjusted by platform policy.

2. The premium index is computed as the median of three values: (Mark Price − Index Price) / Index Price, using prices from major spot exchanges weighted by liquidity.

3. To prevent manipulation, Bybit applies a clamp mechanism—funding rates are capped between -0.75% and +0.75% per 8-hour interval.

4. The Mark Price—not the Last Traded Price—is used for funding calculations. It incorporates fair price marking logic with decaying impact from recent trades and order book depth.

5. Funding payments are settled in the settlement currency of the contract—USDT for USDT-margined contracts, BTC for COIN-margined ones—and appear instantly in the wallet balance post-settlement.

Impact of Funding Rates on Trading Strategy

1. High positive funding environments often signal excessive long leverage and may precede sharp corrections—some traders use sustained positive funding as a contrarian bearish signal.

2. Arbitrageurs monitor divergence between Bybit’s funding rate and those on Binance or OKX to execute cross-exchange basis trades.

3. Scalpers avoid holding positions across funding timestamps to eliminate unexpected debit entries, especially during volatile macro events.

4. Yield-seeking traders construct neutral delta portfolios—pairing longs on low-funding assets with shorts on high-funding ones—to capture net funding accrual without directional exposure.

5. Bybit’s funding history API endpoint allows developers to pull historical funding data for backtesting strategies involving funding carry or mean-reversion triggers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I see funding rates before opening a position?A: Yes. Funding rate and next funding time are visible on the trading interface prior to order placement. No position is required to view current or predicted values.

Q: Are funding payments taxed?A: Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction. In many regions, funding receipts or payments are treated as income or expense—consult a local tax professional for compliance guidance.

Q: Does Bybit charge fees on funding transfers?A: No. Funding settlements occur on-chain or internally without additional transaction fees. The full credited or debited amount appears in your wallet.

Q: What happens if my wallet balance is insufficient to cover a funding debit?A: Bybit will attempt to deduct from available margin. If insufficient, the position may be auto-deleveraged or partially liquidated based on maintenance margin requirements.
