How to change your wallet name in MetaMask? (Account Settings)
You can rename your MetaMask wallet display name instantly—it’s a local label only, doesn’t affect your address, transactions, or dApp connections.
Mar 15, 2026 at 06:39 am
Accessing Account Settings in MetaMask
1. Open the MetaMask browser extension or mobile application and ensure you are logged into the desired wallet account.
2. Click or tap on the account icon located in the top-right corner of the interface — this typically displays your current account name or a set of initials.
3. From the dropdown or slide-up menu, select Settings to enter the configuration panel.
4. Navigate to the Account Details section, which may be under a broader “Security & Privacy” or “Advanced” tab depending on your version.
5. Locate the editable field labeled Account Name — this is distinct from your wallet address and serves only as a local display label.
Editing the Wallet Display Name
1. Tap or click directly on the current name next to the account avatar or identifier.
2. A text input box will appear, allowing full modification of the label.
3. Enter any alphanumeric string up to 32 characters; special characters like emojis or symbols are permitted but may not render consistently across all devices.
4. Press Enter on desktop or tap outside the input field on mobile to confirm.
5. The change takes effect immediately and requires no transaction, signature, or network confirmation since it is stored locally in your browser or device storage.
Understanding Local vs. On-Chain Identity
1. The wallet name you assign exists solely within your MetaMask client and has no presence on Ethereum or any EVM-compatible blockchain.
2. Smart contracts, dApps, and block explorers recognize only your public address — never the custom display name.
3. If you import the same seed phrase into another MetaMask instance or a different wallet application, the name will not carry over unless manually re-entered.
4. Multiple accounts inside one MetaMask vault can each have unique names, aiding visual differentiation during switching.
5. No cryptographic key, private key, or recovery phrase is altered or exposed during this process.
Common Confusion Points
1. Some users mistake the wallet name for an ENS domain — these are entirely separate systems requiring registration and gas fees.
2. Changing the name does not affect connected dApp permissions; previously approved sites retain access to the same address.
3. Exporting account data via JSON file includes the display name, but restoring that file elsewhere does not auto-apply the label without manual re-entry.
4. In multi-chain environments like Polygon or Arbitrum, the same name applies across all networks unless overridden per-network in newer versions.
5. Browser cache clearing or extension reinstallations may reset unsynced name changes if cloud backup is disabled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use the same wallet name for two different accounts in one MetaMask vault?A: Yes. MetaMask allows duplicate display names across accounts — it does not enforce uniqueness internally.
Q: Does renaming my wallet impact my ability to receive tokens or NFTs?A: No. Receiving assets depends exclusively on your public address, which remains unchanged.
Q: Why doesn’t my new wallet name show up in a dApp’s account selector?A: Most dApps fetch only the address and chain ID; they do not query or display MetaMask’s local naming layer.
Q: Is there a way to batch rename multiple accounts?A: Not natively. Each account must be renamed individually through its respective Account Details screen.
