How to use a hardware wallet with MetaMask? (Bridge Guide)
To connect your Ledger or Trezor to MetaMask, update firmware, install the Ethereum app, plug in the device, unlock it, and approve the connection on-screen—then import accounts securely.
Apr 01, 2026 at 07:40 am
Connecting Your Hardware Wallet to MetaMask
1. Ensure your hardware wallet device—such as Ledger Nano S/X or Trezor Model T—is updated with the latest firmware and compatible app installed (e.g., Ethereum app for Ledger).
2. Open MetaMask in your browser extension or mobile app and navigate to the account settings menu.
3. Select “Connect Hardware Wallet” and choose your device type from the dropdown list.
4. Plug the device into your computer via USB and unlock it using your PIN or passphrase.
5. Confirm the connection request on the device screen when prompted by MetaMask.
Importing Accounts into MetaMask
1. After successful connection, MetaMask will scan for accounts associated with your hardware wallet’s derivation path.
2. By default, it uses Ethereum's standard BIP-44 path: m/44'/60'/0'/0, which corresponds to the first Ethereum account.
3. You may manually adjust the derivation path if your wallet was configured differently during setup.
4. Click “Connect” next to each account you wish to import; multiple addresses can be added simultaneously.
5. Once imported, these accounts appear under the “Hardware Wallets” section in MetaMask’s account selector.
Signing Transactions Securely
1. Initiate any transaction—sending tokens, approving contracts, or interacting with dApps—as you normally would within MetaMask.
2. When MetaMask detects a hardware wallet is connected, it automatically routes the signing request to the device.
3. Review all transaction details directly on your hardware wallet’s display: recipient address, amount, gas fee, and data field.
4. Press the physical button(s) on your device to approve or reject the operation.
5. MetaMask displays “Transaction Submitted” only after cryptographic confirmation is received from the hardware wallet.
Using MetaMask with Cross-Chain Bridges
1. Navigate to a trusted bridge interface such as Arbitrum Bridge, Polygon PoS Bridge, or Optimism Gateway while logged into MetaMask.
2. Confirm that your hardware wallet remains connected and unlocked before initiating asset transfers across chains.
3. Select the source network and destination chain, then specify the token and amount you intend to bridge.
4. MetaMask will prompt two separate hardware wallet confirmations—one for the approval transaction and another for the actual bridge execution.
5. Each signature must be verified on-device; never rely solely on screen prompts in the browser extension.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use my Ledger with MetaMask on mobile?A: Yes, but only through the official Ledger Live mobile app paired with MetaMask Mobile via WalletConnect—not direct USB connection.
Q: Why does MetaMask show “No accounts found” even though my Trezor is connected?A: This usually occurs when the Ethereum app isn’t open on the Trezor or when the wrong derivation path is selected. Try restarting both devices and reselecting m/44'/60'/0'/0.
Q: Is it safe to bridge assets while using a hardware wallet with MetaMask?A: The hardware wallet adds strong protection against private key exposure, but always verify bridge contract addresses and network selection manually before signing.
Q: Do I need to install additional browser extensions besides MetaMask to support hardware wallets?A: No. MetaMask natively supports Ledger and Trezor without third-party plugins—though Ledger users may need the Ledger Live desktop app running in the background for full compatibility.
