How to Cancel Pending Transactions in MetaMask Wallet?
MetaMask pending transactions linger in the mempool until confirmed or replaced—cancellation requires a higher-gas replacement with the same nonce, costing extra ETH but resolving stuck transfers.

Understanding Pending Transactions
1. A pending transaction appears in MetaMask when it has been signed and broadcast to the Ethereum network but not yet confirmed by miners or validators.
2. These transactions remain in the mempool until included in a block or dropped due to low gas price or network congestion.
3. Each transaction carries a unique nonce—a sequential number tied to the sender’s address—which determines execution order.
4. If multiple transactions share the same nonce, only the one with the highest gas fee is likely to be processed.
5. MetaMask does not provide a direct “cancel” button; cancellation relies on replacing the original transaction using the same nonce.
Gas Price Replacement Method
1. Open MetaMask and navigate to the transaction list under the “Activity” tab.
2. Locate the pending transaction and click the three-dot menu icon next to it.
3. Select “Speed Up” or “Cancel” — both options trigger a new transaction with the same nonce.
4. When choosing “Cancel”, MetaMask automatically constructs a zero-value transaction sent to the sender’s own address.
5. The replacement transaction must include a gas fee at least 10% higher than the original to be accepted by miners.
Manual Transaction Override
1. Access MetaMask settings and enable “Advanced” mode under Preferences.
2. Turn on “Customize transaction nonce” to manually input a nonce value.
3. Set the nonce equal to that of the pending transaction—visible via Etherscan or MetaMask’s transaction details.
4. Submit a new transaction with identical nonce and higher gas price, even if sending 0 ETH to self.
5. Monitor the status on a block explorer: once the replacement confirms, the original drops from the mempool.
Browser and Cache Considerations
1. Clearing browser cache may refresh MetaMask’s internal state but does not remove pending transactions from the network.
2. Restarting the browser or disabling/re-enabling the MetaMask extension resets UI display but not on-chain status.
3. Using private browsing mode prevents interference from cached session data during replacement attempts.
4. Avoid switching networks while a transaction is pending—this can misalign nonce tracking across chains.
5. Brave users must disable Shields for WalletConnect compatibility, otherwise signature requests may stall silently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Can I cancel a pending transaction without paying extra gas?No. Every cancellation requires broadcasting a new transaction with higher gas, making it impossible to withdraw without cost.
Q2: What happens if my replacement transaction also stays pending? The replacement itself becomes subject to the same rules—its gas price must exceed current network base fee plus priority fee to avoid repeating the issue.
Q3: Does MetaMask support cancellation on Polygon or BSC networks?Yes. The nonce-based replacement logic applies universally across EVM-compatible chains including Polygon, BSC, and Avalanche, provided RPC endpoints are correctly configured.
Q4: Why does MetaMask show “Failed” instead of “Cancelled” after override?MetaMask labels the original as “Failed” once its nonce is consumed by a confirmed replacement—even though no error occurred during submission.
