How to set up a Phantom wallet? (Solana ecosystem)
Install Phantom via phantom.app, create a wallet with a 12-word recovery phrase, connect to Solana dApps, and send/receive SOL or SPL tokens securely—all within your browser.
Feb 23, 2026 at 10:00 pm
Installing the Phantom Browser Extension
1. Navigate to the official Phantom website at phantom.app using a Chromium-based browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Brave.
2. Click the “Download” button and select the appropriate extension version for your browser.
3. Confirm the installation prompt in your browser and allow necessary permissions for the extension to function properly.
4. Once installed, a purple fox icon appears in the top-right corner of your browser toolbar.
5. Click the icon to launch Phantom and begin the wallet setup flow.
Creating a New Wallet
1. Select “Create a new wallet” on the welcome screen.
2. Choose a strong, memorable password—this is used to unlock the extension locally and is never transmitted to any server.
3. Carefully write down the 12-word secret recovery phrase in the exact order shown. Phantom displays it only once during creation.
4. Verify the phrase by selecting words in correct sequence when prompted—this ensures accurate recording.
5. After confirmation, the wallet dashboard loads with a Solana address and initial SOL balance display.
Connecting to Solana dApps
1. Visit a Solana-based decentralized application such as Raydium, Jupiter, or Magic Eden.
2. Look for a “Connect Wallet” button, typically located in the top-right corner of the interface.
3. From the wallet selection modal, choose “Phantom” — the extension injects its provider automatically.
4. Approve the connection request in the Phantom popup window; this grants read-only access to your public address.
5. Once connected, your Solana address appears in the dApp header, enabling interaction with tokens, NFTs, and smart contracts.
Receiving and Sending SOL or SPL Tokens
1. Click the “Receive” tab inside Phantom to reveal your Solana public address and QR code.
2. Share the address or scan the QR code with another wallet to receive funds—SOL and compatible SPL tokens appear instantly.
3. To send assets, click “Send”, paste the recipient’s Solana address, and specify the amount and token type.
4. Review transaction details including network fee (usually under 0.00001 SOL) before confirming.
5. Sign the transaction using your wallet password—the operation broadcasts directly to the Solana blockchain via Phantom’s integrated RPC endpoints.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I import an existing Solana wallet into Phantom?A: Yes. During setup, select “Import wallet” and enter your 12-word seed phrase from another Solana-compatible wallet like Solflare or Backpack.
Q: Does Phantom support hardware wallets?A: As of current implementation, Phantom does not integrate with Ledger or Trezor devices for Solana signing—private keys remain software-managed within the browser extension.
Q: What happens if I lose my password but still have my recovery phrase?A: You can fully restore access by reinstalling Phantom and choosing “Import wallet” with the original 12-word phrase—no password is required for restoration.
Q: Is my SOL balance visible to Phantom or third parties after connecting to a dApp?A: No. Phantom only shares your public address; balance data resides on-chain and is fetched client-side via Solana’s public RPCs—not sent to Phantom servers.
