Elise said: “The UK is currently facing a prolonged period of dry weather, posing challenges for the healthy growth of garden flowers and plants.

“On hot days, deeper, less frequent watering is preferred over quick sprinkles throughout the day. This encourages deeper root growth, building your plants’ resilience to heat and drought.”

What time of day is best to water plants?

Elise from Prestige Flowers explained: “You should water in the early morning, before temperatures rise or the sun’s heat is at its strongest, to give the moisture a chance to be absorbed by the soil.

“Midday watering in this heat would be pointless, as the water will evaporate before reaching your plants’ roots.

But be aware, damp plants overnight can attract pests who might seek shelter and moisture.”

She added: “When watering during a heatwave, you need to make sure you make every drop counts. After very little rain in parts of the UK recently, reservoirs and groundwater levels will be depleted.

“Always aim for the roots, not the leaves, to ensure the water gets where it’s needed. Be gentle and use a watering can or a hose with a mist setting so you don’t wash away any soil or damage delicate plants.
