Within Polkadot's ecosystem, individual blockchains are called "parachains," while the main chain is known as the "Relay Chain." The network facilitates continuous and seamless information exchange between these parachains and the Relay Chain, thus providing interoperability. Any developer or organization can create a custom parachain using Substrate, a platform for building cryptocurrencies and decentralized systems. Once connected to the Polkadot network, these parachains become interoperable with all others. The network validators are responsible for ensuring the security and validation of data across these parachains, contributing to the protocol's scalability.

Finally, DOT is utilized for "bonding" when adding new parachains to the ecosystem. During bonding, the DOT is locked for the duration of the bonding period and is released once the parachain is removed from the ecosystem.
