Aurora Labs, a blockchain developer, has announced the launch of the Bitcoin Light Client, which will connect Bitcoin with NEAR Protocol for the first time. The Light Client will reportedly function as a smart contract on the NEAR network, allowing NEAR-based decentralized applications (dApps) to verify Bitcoin transactions.

According to the Aurora team, the Light Client will enable NEAR to stay in sync with the latest Bitcoin blockchain state. This integration is expected to pave the way for using Bitcoin assets on NEAR, presenting various opportunities for both networks.

“There’s a lot of untapped value in the Bitcoin ecosystem. NEAR Chain Signatures are a solid step forward, but to really unlock Bitcoin’s potential, we need the ability to read and act on its state,” said Alex Shevchenko, CEO of Aurora Labs.

In addition to the Light Client, Aurora Labs has also introduced a Relayer Service to ensure that the Light Client remains up to date with the latest transactions from the Bitcoin network. This service will act as a continuous bridge between the two ecosystems.

The connection between NEAR and Bitcoin is being further enhanced by a chain signature service rolled out by Proximity Labs. This service is designed to facilitate the building of native Bitcoin bridges, enabling the transfer of Bitcoin (BTC) to and from the NEAR network.

According to Aurora, the chain signature service is crucial for integrating Bitcoin assets with NEAR. While Aurora's Bitcoin Light Client provides the foundation, the chain signature service allows these assets to move across networks.

“After initiating its development, Aurora Labs is handing over the project to NEAR One to continue its growth and progress,” the team explained.
