Keep an eye out for any spare £2 coins you may have lying around, as one particular design from 2002 could be worth over £50 to the right collector.

The coin was minted to mark the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Northern Ireland and features an athlete silhouette and the UK flag on one side, with the Queen's portrait on the other.

But what makes this £2 coin special is a tiny, obscure symbol that was included in the original design - and it's causing the coin to be valued at up to 26 times its original £2 face value on the collectors' market.

In total, 4,855,500 of these coins were minted, so there are plenty out there waiting to be discovered by eagle-eyed collectors.

The collectable bimetallic coin seems to have surged in value thanks to an unusual marking that's been engraved on the metal.

Released during Queen Elizabeth II's reign, the coin is made up of a base metal alloy and was first circulated in 2002 to mark the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games, the Mirror reports.

And now, The Britannia Coin Company, based in Royal Wootton Bassett, has unveiled images of the rare £2 coin, which the company is offering for sale with an initial price tag of £52 - highlighting the huge premium it has gained over the original £2 face value.
