Accra, Ghana - The Bank of Ghana and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) have successfully concluded a collaborative project known as the Digital Economy Semi-Fungible Token (DESFT), designed to facilitate enhanced cross-border trade and financial inclusion for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) between Ghana and Singapore.

As part of the DESFT initiative, the two central banks conducted live transactions utilizing digital tokens that adhere to United Nations-established standards. These tokens encapsulate verified business documentation, including licenses, certifications, and trade records.

Ghana recently achieved a significant milestone by executing the first cross-border transaction using its digital currency, the e-cedi, in conjunction with a Singapore dollar stablecoin. This transaction marks a pivotal step towards promoting financial inclusion for SMEs engaged in international trade.

The cross-border payments were facilitated through a decentralized network leveraging the Purpose Bound Money (PBM) protocol, a groundbreaking system developed by MAS in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the central banks of Italy and South Korea. Renowned corporations, such as Amazon, have actively piloted the PBM protocol.

The ultimate goal is to seamlessly integrate traditional business records with the digital ownership capabilities of NFTs.
