Somnia, the EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain optimized for powering mass-consumer applications in the metaverse, has opened its Testnet, Shannon, for developers to deploy applications and users to become familiar with the platform.
Somnia is a fast and cost-efficient Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible Layer 1 blockchain, built to serve millions of users and support mass-consumer applications like games, social platforms, and more. It is capable of processing more than 1 million transactions per second (TPS) with sub-second finality and sub-cent fees.
Somnia’s mission is to be the foundation on which applications can be scaled to web2 usage levels with support for millions of concurrent users while taking advantage of the decentralized properties that web3 offers. Other key objectives include open censorship-resistant systems, a completely decentralized environment where no singular party can control and hoard value, as well as composable systems where value is shared between all participants and collaboration becomes the culture.
Other than that, Somnia also wants to empower builders with the flexibility and space to create sustainable models of engagement and ownership that safeguard digital asset rights, while removing barriers for content creation and participation. The blockchain will initially focus on gaming, metaverse, and social experiences before expanding to sectors that can further serve user needs.
To achieve its high-performance level, Somnia implements four key innovations in its blockchain architecture with the first being accelerated sequential execution. Unlike parallel execution which executes transactions simultaneously, Somnia has chosen to use a single core that is supposed to go extremely fast. The blockchain also has a custom-built database called IceDB which uses performance reports for predictable read and write operations to further optimize these operations.
At the same time, a multi stream consensus design streamlines the data processing workflow by eliminating the need for a consensus mechanism within individual data chains. Each validator runs their own individual chain before submitting their final data to a separate consensus chain for validation. Lastly, Somnia deploys advanced compression techniques to drastically reduce the data size of transactions and better deal with increased node-to-node data traffic.
In order to build their vision of a blockchain that supports high levels of growth, Somnia is developing an ecosystem of omnichain protocols with seamless interoperability. The Somnia protocols will achieve the blockchain’s key objectives in the hopes of increasing the value and commercial viability of digital assets, and encouraging the development and experimentation for applications in the metaverse. Somnia has also created the Metaverse Browser to serve as a front-end for non-web3 natives by offering a user-friendly interface to interact with the network.
The Virtual Society Foundation (VSF) is an independent organization initiated by Improbable and is behind the development of Somnia. Holding the role of Somnia’s founder is Paul Thomas, who was previously vice president of product management at Improbable.
