Bitcoin Rebounds Above Key Support Levels as Funding Rates Neutralize
Bitcoin (BTC) surged during the Asian trading session on May 6, reaching an intra-day high of $65,523. This marked a notable recovery for the cryptocurrency, which had fallen below $60,000 in the preceding days due to concerns over the U.S. economy.
Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView indicates that the BTC/USD pair experienced a 3.45% increase from lows of $63,340 on May 6. This price movement occurred amidst the 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) acting as immediate support for BTC.
Currently, Bitcoin trades approximately 15% above its two-month low of $56,500, reached on May 1. The recovery has resulted in a bullish weekly candle pattern, and market intelligence platform DecenTrader notes that Bitcoin funding rates have returned to a "more neutral state" after briefly becoming negative last week. DecenTrader observed that "the dip below $60k spooked a lot of traders before the price rebounded."
Data from Coinglass corroborates DecenTrader's findings, revealing that Bitcoin's funding rates on exchanges have become neutral after turning negative last week. While negative funding rates are uncommon, they generally indicate bearish sentiment. Conversely, a neutral funding rate, hovering around 0.025 per 8-hour period or 0.5% weekly, suggests a reset in trader positions and mixed market sentiment.
Nonetheless, if Bitcoin experiences a downside correction from current levels, key support levels will come into play. Independent trader Ali Martinez identifies the $57,000 to $64,000 demand zone (supported by the 50-day EMA) as a "prime buy zone" for BTC.
Martinez shares a chart from Glassnode illustrating that Bitcoin's recent price decline caused the MVRV ratio to fall below its 90-day moving average. In a previous post, Martinez stated that "when the MVRV dips below the 90-day average, it signals a buying opportunity." Despite BTC's recent rise above $60,000, the Bitcoin MVRV Momentum still satisfies this condition, suggesting that it remains an optimal entry point for investors.
Amidst the market volatility, Bitcoin whales have exhibited a "dwindling" conviction to buy the dip, according to on-chain data provider IntoTheBlock. Analysis reveals that addresses holding over 1,000 BTC have actively accumulated in recent months with each price decline. However, since each accumulation period was followed by a price increase, whale accumulation has gradually diminished.
IntoTheBlock explains that "prices have increased shortly following every accumulation. However, note that each spike in accumulation by these holders is smaller than the last." This suggests that large investors may be less eager to purchase the dip, but the ongoing accumulation still indicates bullish sentiment within this investor group.
